Hundreds of Gallons of Contaminated Water Spills from Dept. of Energy National Lab Tanks L

Los Alamos, NM, United States 1/21/2000

Between 500 and 1,000 gallons of waste water contaminated with high explosives was accidentally released from holding tanks onto 200-square feet of soil around the tanks.

The spill occurred at Technical Area 9, a high-explosives research and development facility that is not accessible to the public.

Los Alamos National Laboratory officials said the spill area is flat and not adjacent to any water courses or natural drainage areas.

Officials said they have notified the EPA and the state Environment Department of the spill. Researchers are testing soil samples.

Horrible news.

Sounds a lot like the Hanford spill situation. I wonder if DOE contractors used the same systems on both containment systems.
