Y2K bug bites Cache County computers twice

01/08/2000, 01:00:00 AM

LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Though much of the world escaped the Y2K bug unscathed, the Cache County Sheriff's Office did get bitten -- twice.

First, one person who was released from the Cache County Jail on New Year's Day received a bail bond receipt dated 1900, according to Sheriff's Capt. Bob DeGasser. DeGasser, who serves as the county's emergency management coordinator, said he instructed the jail officer to simply pencil in the correct date. "I mean, that's all we can do," he said. "You have to laugh."

The sheriff's office had tested its computer system, DeGasser said, and did not expect any problems on New Year's Eve, when some computers misread the date change as 1900 rather than 2000. But a few days later, a set of receipts in the civil division were also dated 1900. "It wasn't anything serious," said Sgt. Bob Gaydos, who oversees the office's computer systems. "It's a real easy thing to fix. You'd be amazed what white-out can fix."
