I'm Getting Off this Bus and I'm Not Coming Back

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I've spent the last three days on this forum hoping to contribute a voice of reason to all this panicked discussion oil, various unrelated "possible" computer problems/foulups, etc.

Here's what I've seen:

A lot of angry postings about Clinton, the media, the banking boys, the major corporations - all the "thems" responsible for the mess we're in now.

Relatively few people taking responsibility for their own contributions to problems. Even Gary North in his latest newsletter admitted he was wrong - several times over. It took a brave man to say that. I haven't seen anyone else doing something similar.

A lot of hate and anger-filled responses - "You moron", "idiot", "clueless", etc. I can only conclude that the people contributing these kind of answers simply detest people in general, are not happy themselves, and are the kind of people I wouldn't want to live next door to.

A lot of blame placing but very few real SOLUTIONS suggested - especially TECHNOLOGICAL solutions. Between the guy working on a low-cost hybrid electric vehicle in his garage and the guy ranting about the Clinton/Big Business/Big Oil conspiracy - I'll have lunch with the guy working in his garage.

A huge amount of fear expressed through postings and/or answers. Too many people expecting the "big something".

And not so much talk about the Y2K bug anymore. Now everyone's on to some other thing. I guess it's oil now. It's really not a Year2000 forum anymore. It's a political free-for-all.

I've already received a few hate-filled arrogant and mean-spirited responses. You can see them for yourself.

You can say, well, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Well, that's what I'm doing - I'm getting out of the kitchen. I'm getting off this bus going nowhere. Call it hiding with my head in the sand, whatever you want. I'm tired of the rants.

If you feel the same way, you can e-mail me. If you think I'm not a Clinton hater, that I'm completely in denial about our impending economic and social collapse - you're right. No need to e-mail me about that.

Pull your head from the sand. What do you suggest we do about OPEC? Do you really think we're ready to switch to solar heat in the Northeastern US TOMMORROW MORNING?

Of course not, so it does matter that I'm seeing an increase in unplanned maintainence. It scares me. It should make you at least a little nervous, but I respect your right to ignore my warnings to you. If you feel you must go somewhere else, go.

No one is asking you to stay. And PS-if you're tired of the rants, why did you post yours?

Hey Dave,

Welcome to the internet. You must develope a thick skin. I'm still working on it. Don't take it personally.

See ya back soon.

Uh... Dave,

Nobody cares.

Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out, you might think somebody kicked you.

-- nothere nothere (notherethere@hotmail.com), January 20, 2000.

Dave, you do not have your head in the sand - you are correct ITEM: Oil is NOT trading at a 9 year high ($28+)... it is trading at $5 just like the pollys predicted. ITEM: There are NO problems in VEnezuala (US MAIN OIL EXPORTER)which prevents them from meeting their commitments ITEM: OPEC are NICE guys... they LOVE the WEST & want to make oil as cheap as possible ITEM:IRAQ wants to help out by exporting as much as possible to the West thereby weakening OPECs hand

FINALLY: Clinton is the most righteous human being that ever lived

GROW UP & GET A LIFE!!!!

Gotta Love it.

don't go away mad

Just go away

Hi, Dave,

Sorry I never replied to any of your posts. Recently I've been in *super prep* mode because I need to finish some things before the stock market crashes, which will bring down the entire US economy. People scoff at me, but I won't stop preparing for the coming depression. It's OK if you think I'm crazy; my coworkers do.

Take care, dude...

Hey, Dave,

Since you obviously think oil isn't anything of consequence, read the post above this. I take it that you don't live in Maine and depend on non-existent kerosene for heating.

Dave, please contribute a nice voice of reason in regard to 20 below zero nights with no heat.

I'm really at a loss to understand why you came to this forum, and at more of a loss to understand your departure rant. A big man would admit that he didn't belong here and slip silently away. A little man simply rails at those who don't agree with him.

Dave,

I didn't like your posts because of their prissy, finger-wagging tone. No one likes someone presenting their objections in an arrogant manner (I speak from experience, so relax).

I also noticed that you focused on tearing down other people's position, often by merely "waving away" their evidence, instead of refuting it. You seemed to be telling people to "shut up and be quiet" without fairly evaluating their sources (such as the SEC Chairmain at the banking conference who told bankers that "Y2k is not over" - for example).

If you're going to take this approach, expect a spirited rebuttal!

Hey Dave- Exactly why should we apologize to anyone. The only thing we are guilty of is looking out for the well being of our family, friends, and selves. You know someone posted a thread earlier about us being selfish hoarders, blah..blah..blah. Now why does it bother people about what we do with our time or money? I cannot recall the last time I told a perfect stranger what to do with either. We are a bunch of wonderfully different people, and this is more than anything, our coffee house. Our right to free speech is protected by the Constitution of this amazing country. So you have a problem with that? Bye.

-- Gia (laureltree7@hotmail.com), January 20, 2000.

Dave, I too, choose the mechanic guy. Why? because I own no stocks or bonds, but I have to keep my auto going, so I can go to work. I am like watching these oil and stocks people from a distance, to try and determine if my auto gas is going to cost me much more tomorrow, than today. I take each post with a heaping tablespoon of salt, and continue searching other opinions, on same subject. I take no post, at face value. If you can take the time, I suggest you might do the same.

Hey, hold on, is this your wallet under the seat?

-- Y2Kook (Y2Kook@usa.net), January 20, 2000.

All of the nasty good byes every one is posting really do not address the fact that every thing this guy says about this forum is right on the nose. To sum up - Soap makers bought tuna and ammo because the date rollover was going to keep us from eating microwave popcorn while watching Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Full stop. Now it is "the big something" that you prepped for. Well while you angry and very wrong doomlits dream up more stuff to be afraid I will go re- read all those OPEC posts that you all were posting (not) while salivating over C4I and the good old y2k bug..hat's right, say it with me,...y2k.

-- ProudPolly (Proud2b@polly.net), January 20, 2000.

You've been here only 3 days and I've been here over 2 years so I do come with qualifications. I've seen and read it all here, just go to the archives and see for yourself. I've never quite understood why people come here looking for the answers to all their troubles and fears, and when TB2000 doesn't meet their expectations, they end up playing the martyr card. Do you want everyone to think alike, have the same opinions and never interject an original thought? I think if people can't hang with the structure and personalities of this forum, then find one where you will fit in. I've lurked on a few forums and it's no different anywhere else. Don't stay in one place and be unhappy, the Internet is a very big place.

Here's your hat. What's your hurry? Bye.

{assuming my best Svedish accent}

Is it important to you to be a voice of reason to zese hopeless people? Vy ist dat?

Bye!!! who cares!!! you're funny!!!

-- INever (INevercheckmy@onebox.com), January 21, 2000.

You are the problem! How could there truely be an oil shortage when we have not even touched the biggest reserve in history? (Alberta tar sands) We are in peak production season for oil and the suppliers will not stop producing. If they do Alberta Tar sands will be viable and the World has another instant (well maybe not instant but soon enough) 10 years supply for every vehicle on the road, air, water moon etc. It may cost a 10 cents a gallon more but we can afford it (other western nations pay between $2.50 and 6.00 per gallon today).

And within 2-3 years fuel cels will be in 25% of every car ( I work for Ballard and Im not an optomist)

You really are the problem and I lump you in with the wacko's that predicted TEOTWAWKI due to Y2K.

-- (youarethe@problem.com), January 21, 2000.

The question is not whether we're going to have oil. The question is at what price will we have oil, and what will that price do to the economy. 1973-75 was not good for the stock market?

-- Stay aware (of@the.trends), January 21, 2000.

Dear Dave:

Even in the 3 days you have lurked, you SHOULD have seen the atribution to Y2K problems for the oil price rises et al. If you missed them, I'm REALLY not sure about your research abilities. Not really sorry to see you go, if this was your atitude upon arriving.

OH yeah, I agree that there are a lot of boorish people here. But, like someone I know sez to a world Board Member of one of the Big 4 Consulting firms "Last time I checked you all recruit from the human race, and the distribution in your company is about like the universe, as far as idiots and cool guys goes"

Night train

-- jes a philosophizen ol footballer (nighttr@in.lane), January 21, 2000.

Bye Dave. Genuinely sorry to see you go. There are very few sceptics/questioners left here now; mostly just cognitive dissonancers. It's a real shame: I still think we're in for some problems that won't be reported in the mainstream media until they're too big to deny; but I no longer think that I'll see them here first.

Mostly just socio-political ranting, and off topic or out of context anecdotes now. There are a few gems, but there's a lot of dross to sift through. :(

-- Servant (public_service@yahoo.com), January 21, 2000.

I think Dave made some good points. I read through some of the posts and I think a few people were a little hard on him. It takes a while to learn the rhythm of a forum, no matter which one. And this one is unique. Plus, the last few days this board has been spammed with some outrageous posts and this got some tempers flaring and maybe it resulted in a little displaced aggression of the part of some people.

I like to read different views, it brings balance to the forum. We don't want to scare new people away because they could contribute a lot but they may be afraid to post for fear of getting flamed. Take a look at the Debunkers board, they jump on people right off the bat. I will never post there again...nobody needs the verbal abuse, it's counterproductive.

Anyway, Dave gave a real address and real name--that should say something right there. I just think it would be good to ask the person to clarify their point without jumping too hard on him/her. Maybe Dave came across a little too hard too, but I sincerely believe he was trying to make a contribution from his point of view. He wasn't spamming, trolling, etc.

Well...nuff said. Thanks guys. =)
