OT-Trouble with NS 4.7 or IE 5.0 - Help

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I recently upgraded both a Win95 and Win98 machine with Netscape 4.7 and IE 5.0.

Since upgrading both machines frequently freeze up and become totally unresponsive. This happens during use of various different applications. Sometimes CtrlAltDel shows Explorer not responding, sometime nohing appears hanging. I can end task, but it still hangs. I can't even shut down from there. Only solution is to power down and restart. Very aggravating and time consuming!

Anybody else with this problem? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

FWIW: There is a new version of Netscape available: 4.7.1

Hi Steve. I had to quit using Netscape ver 4.7. It was causing complete lockups. I had to reset the computer each time. I'm using MS IE 5.0 now with no problems.

If you switch to IE 5.0, just remember not to open Netscape at the same time. They don't like each other.

After the rollover, Netscape 4.7 would cause lockups for no apparent reason, but especially newsgroup buffer problems.

I upgraded to Netscape 4.7 prior to year end. I was running Windows 98 and upgraded it (from a MS disc) for all Y2k upgrades to Win98 prior to loading NS 4.7. I haven't had any problems, other than from my ISP (which isn't anything unusual). I used to have 'freeze-up' problems prior to the upgrades, which required rebooting. So I can appreciate your frustrations. I would obtain all Windows systems upgrades available. There are some tests you can run (from the MS site) which checks your system to see what you may need.

I've been running IE 5.01 with 95-B for almost 2 months with no problems.

I agree with Y2kObserver, download the fixes. With IE 5 you can use the "Windows Update" site with Win/95. Before IE 5, this site only worked with Win/98.

http://windowsupdate.micros oft.com/

Hit the PRODUCT UPDATES link. It checks your OS version, and builds a list of downloads customized for your machine. It also INSTALLS the updates for you. Srart with the CRITICAL updates.

Good luck. <:)=

Thanks all. You've got me heading in the right direction (Home!) It's nice to have the collective knowledge and experience to hit on.

Ed, What's with 4.7.1? Man, I just downloaded 4.7 the week before rollover. It's getting tough keeping up with all these fixes/improvements(?).

Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

Use Windows Update Steve...

I had the same problem. If we must live with WINDOWS, we must PATCH it!
