Railroad activity... Any recent observations?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Early this month we had several posts reporting observations of railroad activity in various locations; some seemed "normal", some seemed "light". It may be interesting if some could post updates reporting recent observations.

Thanks in advance.

No trains at all running here...but they took out all the tracks about 50 years ago... We hope to get one up and running any decade now.

Trains to two large glass plants in area (NC PA) seem on normal schedule. Makers of bottles for salad dressing, baby food, liquor bottles etc. and other plant is largest maker of glass blocks in world. 11 car train into Petrowax--no idea if normal or not. Petrowax used to be the Quaker State refinery--near Smethport, PA.

Didn't hear any trains up here in NE MN for about 2 weeks after rollover. I have heard them a # of times since.

SW Michigan:

There was a two week slowdown, now seems back to normal, according to an employee who lives near a major RR track, hears a number of trains every night.

Main north/south lines of CSX and NS are within earshot here in north central AL -- was quiet for a day or two after New Year; since then has been pretty much back to normal. (Have been a railroad buff since 1934, so I hear train whistles NO one else does!)
