Afraid so. Dr. Laura's degree is essentially in PE. She has absolutely no formal training or certification in counseling, psychology or psychotherapy. She DOES have a Masters in some sort of counseling, but it was a correspondence degree. I don't know about you, but if I ever have to go to a therapist or counselor, I hope I find one who got their license through classwork and supervised training, not through the mail.

Laura also had to surrender a lapsed California counseling license she once earned as part of a legal settlement. She apparently attempted to slander her radio competition, Dr. Barbara DeAngelis (you might recognize that name), and had her license lifted as a result. She never admitted wrongdoing in the case, but she also didn't fight the penalty in court or before a professional tribunal that could have restored her license. She simply let them take her license without a fight. Sounds to me like a guilty person.

You'll notice that she doesn't say on her show what her degree is in? Try calling her show and ask the call screener what she's a doctor OF. I tried that once, and got hung up on.

There are several unauthorized biographies out there that detail some of the misleading an fraudulent behavior she engages in, and how Dr. Laura doesn't practice what she preaches. There is also no shortage of material on the net slamming the lady. Do a little digging. You might be surprised at what you find.

I know lots of people hang on her every word, but once you get a good long look at the lady behind the show, suddenly she doesn't look quite so good any more.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with PE. It was my second favorite subject in high school, right behind lunch. :)

That may be, but using that "Dr." title in front of her name is deceptive and misleading, and possibly unethical. People respond to that. Would you feel differently if, for example, Dr. Dean Edell had a doctorate in English, but still dispensed medical advice?

Not trying to slam or flame, just trying to be honest and realistic about this. Please be gentle! :)

For those who aren't great fans of Dr. Laura (or Rush Limbaugh, or George Dubya, or several other people), you might want to browse around Terry Coppage's site (http://www.bartcop.com/). The man does not like her at all. (Warning: Those scandalous pictures of Dr. Laura are there, too, but most of them don't jump out at you unless you go looking for them. But they're there, and he's begged her to sue him to have them removed. Just a caveat.)

Chuck....please don't be offended. i think phys ed teachers are great. i fell in love with one once. haha he was a high school teacher and i was a high school student. what a hunk.

i actually have never listened to her but i know folks have strong feelings about her and was very surprised when i heard this.

i do hope she has a disclaimer that says "i am not a psychologist, if you have a mental problem, consult a psychologist."

I think Dr. Joy Brown (another radio personality, and a psychiatrist) says it best when she says "Dr. Laura" is a bully. I agree, she should have a little compassion for folks who have made mistakes in their lives, after all, she posed nude for photos that her married boyfriend (at the time) took of her. (And now they are on the net)

I occasionally listen to Dr. Laura. Or at least I used to. The last time I heard her show, it was shortly before Christmas. She had people calling in, talking about their blessings and the good things that were in their life. One woman called in and told Dr. Laura that she was blessed with a very sweet husband, who told her that he could never give her the Christmas present he really wanted to give her, a new pancreas. Dr. Laura immediately jumped on the woman. "Why do you need a new pancreas?"

The woman responded, "Well, I'm a type II, insulin dependant diabetic,"

Dr. Laura shreiked back, "Some people develop diabetes as children, and that's a shame, but adults who develop diabetes simply aren't taking care of themselves. If you husband really wanted to give you a gift you needed, he would give you a sense of discipline when it comes to your health,"

And that's when I stopped listening to Dr. Laura.

I'm a real talk show radio junkie, but her show-she-e-e-esh, almost rather listen to larry king, at least he makes no bones about his ultral liberal agenda. Of course, I DON'T listen to larry king, but did before, just checkin on the opposition! hehehehehe

Dr. Laura is to Pop Psychology what the Mormon church is to Modern religion.

They both sound pretty good, but all credibility fades once you find their securely guarded Diaries.

Both extremely successful, if you believe their own stats.

Dr. Laura is rude, judgemental and nauseatingly capable of counseling someone after twenty seconds of chatting.

The Mormon church is friendly, helpful and fascinating, until you begin to discuss its history.

Both Dr. Laura and the Momo church are totally charming on a first date...just don't bring up the past!

He drank five cups, and when he felt that he could walk a little better, he went home. He dared not come before Emma in this state. Joseph was no habitual drunkard, but he used to get on sprees. From History of Chenango County, N.Y.:

Joe Smith, the founder of Mormonism, operated quite extensively in this town [Afton, N.Y.]and vicinity during the early years of his career as a prophet. The reputation of the family was very bad and Joe was considered the worst of the whole. Somewhere about 1828 or 1829 Smith made his appearance in Afton and attended school in District No. 9. To convince the unbelievers that he did possess supernatural powers he announced that he would walk upon the water. The performance was to take place in the evening, and to the astonishment of unbelievers, he did walk upon the water where it was known to be several feet deep, only sinking a few inches below the surface. This proving a success, a second trial was announced which bid fair to be as successful as the first, but when he had proceeded some distance into the river he suddenly went down, greatly to the disgust of himself and proselytes, but to the great amusement of the unbelievers. It appeared on examination that planks were laid in the river a few inches below the surface, and some wicked boys had removed a plank which caused the prophet to go down like any other mortal.[5]
