Australian Mobile phone glitch blacks out coverage across New South Wales and Capital Territory

"Telstra confident mobile phone blackout won't be repeated

Telstra says it does not expect a repeat of a technical problem which blacked out mobile phone coverage across New South Wales and in the Australian Capital Territory yesterday afternoon.

It says up to a third of digital phones in all centres, except the Sydney Metropolitan area, were affected."

Acting Prime Minister John Anderson has asked people in the bush to be patient with the phase-in of the new system to replace analog mobile phones.

The New South Wales' Farmers Association has expressed concern that a number of rural areas are not covered by the CDMA system.

To reiterate (from another thread about Ausie Power outages): The most interesting part of this story is its location - virtually everyone who followed Y2K news in 1998/9 knew (discounting the American Politico/Media Spin) that Australia was more ready (readier?) than anyone else on Earth. I'm not making any statement whatsoever, just think that it's interesting.
