It is being used as the source for information, links, and contact information by news organizations, news groups, and listservers all over the world.

Millions of people are getting extracts to posts on the thread.

In addition to Pine Ridge, we are blowing the lid off of several other issues regarding TPTB. Come see and be part of history in the making.

We just clicked on your thread tonight, Hiding In Plain Sight, and have been praying for all involved.

We haven't posted to the thread because we don't quite understand what is happening and so can't really contribute anything coherent.
However, we are intensely mindful that the American Indians have been mistreated all the years by ppl who have mismanaged the land and animals with utter contempt and raped and pilloried the natural splendor of the Indian's native birthright.

May the United States Government, AND all groups / individuals involved now, WAKE UP and turn toward Justice, Love, Caring, Sharing, and Respect.

May the One Spirit blow through the flute of human hearts and inspire all to seek the Harmonious Way.

OT - FBI/Indian standoff at Pine Ridge Rez!

A must-read thread!

Latest AP take This article looks like the FBI is trying to seize & preserve records. Wrong?

-- Carlos (riffraff1@cybertime.net), January 18, 2000.

I just passed this on to a friend who is a slot machine technician at an Indian casino in MI. I don't know what if anything they can do to help, but it can't hurt to have them in the loop.

It's disgusting the way the Indians are "sovereign nations" when it suits the state, but treated like property when it suits the state.

Gee, that sounds like the classic definition of "forked tongue", now that I think about it.

Best wishes and prayers for you and yours.

Come to think of it, isn't Bruce Babbitt embroiled in a series of scandals concerning some (or *all*?) of the tribes getting ripped off by the gov't? I wonder if that plays into any of this.

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), January 18, 2000.

Our prayers are with you Thunderlight!

I posted some excerpts from the 7am article on Free Republic. Hopefully it will not be deleted, and get some rapid response. Most of the members there are usually very pro-Constitution and very opposed to Federal abuse!

Lastnight I copied that thread and sent it to ABCnews and to OCRegister. Hopefully, it will catch their interest and this story will be out in the open.

Land returned to tribe in deal to clean up Cold War-era waste

(01-15) 02:17 EST SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Eighty-four years after the federal government confiscated thousands of acres of potentially oil- rich land from the Northern Ute Indian tribe, Energy Secretary Bill Richardson says the government is ready to give it back.

If Congress approves the deal, the 84,000 acres will be the largest return of Indian land in the continental United States.

``The land is not needed for national security anymore,'' Richardson said Friday after announcing the agreement at the tribe's headquarters in Fort Duchesne, about 110 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ``The right thing to do is turn it back. They're the rightful owners.''

But there's a caveat. Under the agreement, the tribe can open the land to oil and gas drilling, but will have to pay a percentage of the royalties to the government.

The money will help the government cover the $300 million cost of relocating 10.5 million tons of radioactive rock and soil along the Colorado River left over from the mining of uranium during the Cold War.

``It is actually a moral issue in that the government has finally returned to us what was taken from us without our consent,'' said O. Roland McCook, chairman of the tribe's governing body.

The land, believed to contain oil-rich shale deposits, was given to the Utes in 1882. But in 1916, on the eve of the nation's entry into World War I, the federal government took it back to create a reserve supply of oil for the Navy fleet. The reserve was never tapped.

The Energy Department estimates that the land holds 6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, equal to about 30 percent of the natural gas used in the United States during 1998. There are no estimates of how much oil is there.

The royalty percentage is still being negotiated but is expected to be about 8 percent.

``This is just a big step in the direction of solving the problem,'' said Rep. Chris Cannon, whose district includes both the 4.4 million- acre reservation and the radioactive waste, known as the Atlas tailings. He expects Congress to approve the deal and a proposal to move the tailings.

The radioactive waste sits 750 feet from the Colorado River just outside Arches National Park and about 50 miles south of the land being returned to the Utes.

A study by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that toxins such as arsenic and ammonia are leaching from the pile and contaminating the river, threatening endangered fish.

California lawmakers also have raised concerns that the contamination is tainting drinking water used by people in Arizona, Nevada and Southern California.

Denver-based Atlas Corp., the company that operated the mine from 1962 to 1984, has declared bankruptcy, leaving the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to clean up the pile. The cleanup bond Atlas left behind was woefully inadequate.

The NRC planned to cover the tailings with an earthen cap and drain 500 million gallons of water from the pile. But state and federal officials and environmentalists argued that would not stop contamination. They pressed the Energy Department to take control of the pile and move it 18 miles north of Moab.

``This is a huge breakthrough, and we're very heartened,'' said Bill Hedden, chairman of the Grand Canyon Trust, an environmental group that had sued to have the tailings moved.

As part of the agreement, the Utes pledged to protect a quarter-mile corridor along 75 miles of the Green River. The tribe also has agreed to abide by federal protections for wild horses on the land.

Carlos: The "Latest AP Take" link you provided, above, does not work. Did it ever work, or did you make a mistake in typing the URL? If it did once work, what happened? Did the Washington Post move it, or is there a more sinister explanation?

The royalty percentage is still being negotiated but is expected to be about 8 percent.

Sorry, but this is reminiscent of the beginning of the income tax (... only 1% on the richest people, etc.) as well as those Hollywood actor movie- and TV-profit contracts that people like James Garner had to fight in court to see any daylight from. As well as a Stokely Carmichael quote, something like "the Man will stab you in the back, and then take the knife out an inch, and they call that PROGRESS!?"

Seems to me that the Utes could justifiably take the most radioactive, least oil producing 8% of the land and hand it right back to the Great White Father as payment in kind :-/ ... -zy

An AP report is at http://www.newsday.com/ap/rnmpnt0m.htm (found via the AP post field at www.drudgereport.com).

Title is "100 Sioux Seize Pine Ridge Office", dated AP-NY-01-18-00 0234EST.

I am not sure if this is accurate but it is reported that the protestors are asking the FBI to seize the tribal accounting records. I am not in their shoes but I would be reluctant to want the FBI to seize anything I was interested in preserving, especially if it could be construed as detrimental to the GWF & Co. and/or Big Government in general ...

zygote, I get this result this time: Your browser sent a message this server could not understand. I wouldn't be so pickay-une about it, normally, but there is some question about whether somebody might be making things hard for us.

I have to wonder if it is in the tribe's best interest to get the FBI involved in this matter. Wouldn't US involvement tend to undermind the principle of Indian sovereignity? Don't they have some kind of procedure to recall the treasurer by referrendum, or something like that? It sure seems like they need to address this within their system. Isn't it a reasonable position for the FBI to take, to say that this is outside their jurisdiction?

I don't pretend to have any kind of inside knowledge of the situation... just what's here on these two threads and the direct links from here. Is there some documented evidence of wrong doing?

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), January 18, 2000.

I was please to see WorldNeDaily respond. I sent them the thread yesterday, and in today's edition they have a copy of the initial article from 7AM.

Ain't the net grand?

456,

Yes, indeed. I looked for the article on WND, but didn't find it with a site search. Could you go to the main thread http://hv.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=002Kto and post the link to the WND mention? I think the main thread could serve as an historical document, and it would be good to have all the media links in one place.

Yes there is an occupation proceeding in Pine Ridge at the Tribal Offices, but the FBI is not taking over anything. They have been REQUESTED to come by the people who are occupying the offices--to take possesion of tribal financial records, to shed light on why so much money is missing. Please remember, the FBI was REQUESTED by our people. This is a NON-violent, peaceful protest. Please help us keep it that way. BTW-newsreports from "NewsHawk" are false. Email Mike.Wicks@mindspring.com for the latest reports. He is in hourly contact with Dale Looks Twice--spokesman for the occupation.

-- River (Riverwn@aol.com), January 18, 2000.

Rev. ThunderLight, If you want to get the story out go to www.oej.jack.net and e-mail One Eyed Jack. He broke the story on the "Roby Ridge Standoff" here in ILL. a while back. Jack checks his email every morning so best if you do it now. Be sure and give him a phone number so Barb, (his producer) can make contact. His show runs from 6-9 am central time. He can be heard nationwide on Real Audio, via www.oej.jack.net He will give you a fair shake, but be prepared to answer tough questions. Good luck and best wishes, A Patriot in the Struggle for Freedom

Alot of rumours have circulated about this occupation and ALL of them started on the www. NO martial law has occured, NO federal agents took anything "over". There is NO need for any help from other sources (at this time). This isn't a case of Feds against Indians, its a matter of Tribal government corruption and tribal members trying to stop it.

Here are the latest releases from that tribal office; -------------------- From: "Wild Horse"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 18, 2000

RED CLOUD TRIBAL BUILDING, PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION, SOUTH DAKOTA:

On January 18, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. MST, Federal Bureau of Investigation Agents seized tribal financial records for 1998 - 1999. The federal agents were brought in by the Grass Roots Oyate, a group of concerned Oglala Sioux tribal members who took control of the tribal office on Sunday, January 16, 2000. Their sole purpose for this takeover is to protect files that incriminate the Oglala Sioux Tribal Treasurer, Wesley "Chuck" Jacobs and several Oglala Sioux Tribal Council Members.

Upon vacating the Red Cloud Tribal Building, FBI Agent-In-Charge William Grode stated that they will be travelling to Allen, South Dakota to the Oglala Sioux Tribal District Office to seize records there. Dozens of concerned community members in the Allen community are guarding the building prohibiting any tribal district elected officials from entering the building to tamper with files.

FBI Agent-In-Charge William Grode also informed the Grass Roots Oyate that warrants have been issued and agents are en route to the First National Bank of Gordon in Gordon, Nebraska to seize financial records involving the Oglala Sioux Tribal accounts. First National Bank of Gordon has been the Tribe's primary bank for fourteen years.

Agent Grode informed the Grass Roots Oyate in a meeting on January 17, 2000 that a grand jury investigation has been underway for some time. With today's seizure, the agent stated that indictments are sure to follow soon.

The Grass Roots Oyate have re-occupied the Tribal Office and will remain there until the Oglala Sioux Tribal Treasurer Wesley "Chuck" Jacobs and several of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council Representatives are removed from ffice.

Tribal Council Representatives have retaliated by putting in a request to U.S. President Bill Clinton and South Dakota Governor Bill Janklow to remove the Grass Roots Oyate from the tribal office using "deadly force if necessary".

Several others tribes have phoned in their support of the actions of the Grass Roots Oyate and are considering if they should take similar action on their reservations to deal with widespread political corruption.

For further information, please contact Dale Looks Twice or Floyd Hand at (605) 867-5303.

As with all my posts on the Oglala Occupation Feel free to forward in its entirety -----------endquote--------- From: ishgooda@voyager.net

NOTICE FROM OCCUPIED PINE RIDGE OFFICE What is happening at Pine Ridge is strictly an internal situation of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. If everyone leaves it alone and keeps their own agendas out of it, the Oglala People will handle it just fine. I hope that happens. The so called "news blackout" is just a case of nothing happening that interests the various news agencies very much. There have been news reports coming out now for over 24 hours. It is hardly a case of the Rez borders being shut down. The Feds were asked by the protesters to be there and sieze records. This is not a case of another Wounded Knee occupation with APCs manned by wasichian surrounding a lot of skins. The protesters are following the elected president of the Oglala Tribe. Many of them are active leaders in the tribal government. They know how to handle things just fine without outside meddleing. The latest reports say that the protesters have NOT asked for outside support and for everyone to chill. Oglala politics can get rough and tumble, so this is not to say that everything is going to be nice and calm - but outsiders getting involved can sure make it worse, just as it did back in the troubles of the 70s and the Wounded Knee Occupation. Again, this is an Oglala vs. Oglala tribal matter. It is not Indian vs. whites, Indian vs Feds or anything like that at all - for now anyway.

take care everyone,

jeb
