We just clicked on your thread tonight, Hiding In Plain Sight, and have been praying for all involved.We haven't posted to the thread because we don't quite understand what is happening and so can't really contribute anything coherent.
However, we are intensely mindful that the American Indians have been mistreated all the years by ppl who have mismanaged the land and animals with utter contempt and raped and pilloried the natural splendor of the Indian's native birthright.May the United States Government, AND all groups / individuals involved now, WAKE UP and turn toward Justice, Love, Caring, Sharing, and Respect.

I just passed this on to a friend who is a slot machine technician at an Indian casino in MI. I don't know what if anything they can do to help, but it can't hurt to have them in the loop.It's disgusting the way the Indians are "sovereign nations" when it suits the state, but treated like property when it suits the state.
Gee, that sounds like the classic definition of "forked tongue", now that I think about it.

Come to think of it, isn't Bruce Babbitt embroiled in a series of scandals concerning some (or *all*?) of the tribes getting ripped off by the gov't? I wonder if that plays into any of this.

(01-15) 02:17 EST SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Eighty-four years after the federal government confiscated thousands of acres of potentially oil- rich land from the Northern Ute Indian tribe, Energy Secretary Bill Richardson says the government is ready to give it back.
If Congress approves the deal, the 84,000 acres will be the largest return of Indian land in the continental United States.
``The land is not needed for national security anymore,'' Richardson said Friday after announcing the agreement at the tribe's headquarters in Fort Duchesne, about 110 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ``The right thing to do is turn it back. They're the rightful owners.''
But there's a caveat. Under the agreement, the tribe can open the land to oil and gas drilling, but will have to pay a percentage of the royalties to the government.
The money will help the government cover the $300 million cost of relocating 10.5 million tons of radioactive rock and soil along the Colorado River left over from the mining of uranium during the Cold War.
``It is actually a moral issue in that the government has finally returned to us what was taken from us without our consent,'' said O. Roland McCook, chairman of the tribe's governing body.
The land, believed to contain oil-rich shale deposits, was given to the Utes in 1882. But in 1916, on the eve of the nation's entry into World War I, the federal government took it back to create a reserve supply of oil for the Navy fleet. The reserve was never tapped.
The Energy Department estimates that the land holds 6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, equal to about 30 percent of the natural gas used in the United States during 1998. There are no estimates of how much oil is there.
The royalty percentage is still being negotiated but is expected to be about 8 percent.
``This is just a big step in the direction of solving the problem,'' said Rep. Chris Cannon, whose district includes both the 4.4 million- acre reservation and the radioactive waste, known as the Atlas tailings. He expects Congress to approve the deal and a proposal to move the tailings.
The radioactive waste sits 750 feet from the Colorado River just outside Arches National Park and about 50 miles south of the land being returned to the Utes.
A study by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that toxins such as arsenic and ammonia are leaching from the pile and contaminating the river, threatening endangered fish.
California lawmakers also have raised concerns that the contamination is tainting drinking water used by people in Arizona, Nevada and Southern California.
Denver-based Atlas Corp., the company that operated the mine from 1962 to 1984, has declared bankruptcy, leaving the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to clean up the pile. The cleanup bond Atlas left behind was woefully inadequate.
The NRC planned to cover the tailings with an earthen cap and drain 500 million gallons of water from the pile. But state and federal officials and environmentalists argued that would not stop contamination. They pressed the Energy Department to take control of the pile and move it 18 miles north of Moab.
``This is a huge breakthrough, and we're very heartened,'' said Bill Hedden, chairman of the Grand Canyon Trust, an environmental group that had sued to have the tailings moved.
As part of the agreement, the Utes pledged to protect a quarter-mile corridor along 75 miles of the Green River. The tribe also has agreed to abide by federal protections for wild horses on the land.

The royalty percentage is still being negotiated but is expected to be about 8 percent.Sorry, but this is reminiscent of the beginning of the income tax (... only 1% on the richest people, etc.) as well as those Hollywood actor movie- and TV-profit contracts that people like James Garner had to fight in court to see any daylight from. As well as a Stokely Carmichael quote, something like "the Man will stab you in the back, and then take the knife out an inch, and they call that PROGRESS!?"
Seems to me that the Utes could justifiably take the most radioactive, least oil producing 8% of the land and hand it right back to the Great White Father as payment in kind :-/ ... -zy

I am not sure if this is accurate but it is reported that the protestors are asking the FBI to seize the tribal accounting records. I am not in their shoes but I would be reluctant to want the FBI to seize anything I was interested in preserving, especially if it could be construed as detrimental to the GWF & Co. and/or Big Government in general ...

I have to wonder if it is in the tribe's best interest to get the FBI involved in this matter. Wouldn't US involvement tend to undermind the principle of Indian sovereignity? Don't they have some kind of procedure to recall the treasurer by referrendum, or something like that? It sure seems like they need to address this within their system. Isn't it a reasonable position for the FBI to take, to say that this is outside their jurisdiction?
I don't pretend to have any kind of inside knowledge of the situation... just what's here on these two threads and the direct links from here. Is there some documented evidence of wrong doing?

Yes there is an occupation proceeding in Pine Ridge at the Tribal Offices, but the FBI is not taking over anything. They have been REQUESTED to come by the people who are occupying the offices--to take possesion of tribal financial records, to shed light on why so much money is missing.Please remember, the FBI was REQUESTED by our people. This is a NON-violent, peaceful protest. Please help us keep it that way. BTW-newsreports from "NewsHawk" are false. Email Mike.Wicks@mindspring.com for the latest reports. He is in hourly contact with Dale Looks Twice--spokesman for the occupation.
