IRS- Where's My W-2???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Ok gang,
Normally I get my W-2 from the .gov relating to my .mil service in the first week of January. They ALWAYS have it there, and they ALWAYS give it out by NLT 15 Jan. This is a first. I have yet to recieve it, and am really wondering if the IRS did go Tango-Uniform? Wouldn't that be normal...(this is the first year ever that the .gov owed me money...) Anyone else gotten thier W-2 form yet? I haven't even seen the one from my civilian job, and the way they've been talking...It sounds like it might be a long wait... Any others seeing this?

So far, I'm batting 1 of 3. But I believe they have until the end of January to get things at least postmarked and in the mail.

...BTW, of course it's not the IRS who generates your W-2 -- it's your employer (but you knew that already, I'm sure)...

Unless you work for the IRS, you won't be getting a W-2 from the IRS.

W-2's are wage statements generated by your employer. The due dates for these forms are postmarked by January 31. Employers have a couple of weeks after that to report to the IRS what was reported to employees. Employers must do this either electronically or in hard copy depending on the number of !-2's issued.

If people out there have not received w-2's yet, it has NOTHING to do with the IRS, it is your employer that you should speak with.

But again, these don't have to go out until January 31.

If you want to get a headstart on your return, you can use the year- to-date numbers on your final pay of 1999. Unless there are adjustments to that number for manual stuff done for you in 1999 (such as manual bonus checks), the numbers should be good. Don't file, however, until you see your w-2, otherwise you run the risk of having to file an ammended return.

"Unless you work for the IRS, you won't be getting a W-2 from the IRS."

We *all* work for the IRS, my friend... :)

Scott, you NAILED that one!!!

For the remedial readers here, just how much longer do you think the IRS will function if the .mil employees don't file? And how many other employees are not receiving their W-2's? And I know this takes some imagination here, but fake it....if your employer dicks you on your W-@, then what real proof do you have that they sent ANY money to the IRS on your behalf last year? Pay stubs? BWAAAHAHAHAHA!!!

Billy Boy specified that he normally receives his W-2 from his employer "in the first week of January...ALWAYS...by NLT 15 Jan."

The statutory requirement is that the W-2's must be furnished by 31 January. The odd part here is the deviation from custom.

What I haven't gotten YET is our federal and state income tax forms. For the past several years these have arrived within a week either side of 31 December, usually before that date.

WE, too, have not recieved our State or Federal forms in the mail that were supposed to be that "nice surprise" the 1st week of Jan. according to radio and TV. (nor Husband's W-2 FWIW) Has anyone?

Hi, we're two former IRS agents...

-- Scarecrow (Somewhere@Over.Rainbow), January 17, 2000.

Hi Former IRS agents, We won't be sending any money this year 'cause of NO FORMS!

-- Charli (claypool@belatlantic.net), January 17, 2000.

Let me join the fray by adding that I have not received my W2 nor my statement from unemployment for money received earlier this year. No tax forms for this year from IRS either. I don't really WANT them but I do NEED them, ugh.

That's it then, we all get a tax-free year on Uncle Sam! Party like it's 1999...

-- Hokie (Hokie_@hotmail.com), January 17, 2000.

I have not received my W-2, and normally do before this as well.

-- nuttygirl (nuttygirl@nuts@y2k.com), January 17, 2000.

No Fed or State tax forms yet here either. Last yr I already had gone to HR Block and DONE my taxtes

Don't worry. The W-2's are coming. And the 1040s, long and short, and the schedules. They're all coming. You WILL not be dissappointed. Does the IRS accept 1/10 oz/ eagles in payment?

If all you folks would take even a MINIMAL interest in the affairs of OUR GOVERNMENT, you would realize that there has been a change in the way you do your W-2 forms this year. A lot of employers have been having problems getting the new W-2 forms, so here's how to make one for yourself:

Name________________ Social Security No._______________ How Much Did You Make?_____________ Send It In___________________________

Jumpoff Joe, But given the FUD, why would I do such a thing? I'd rather lie in the weeds and see what happens before I jump up and yell, "Shoot me, over here . . . OVER HERE!" I think that's the prevailing theme of this thread . . . a lot of red-blooded Americans are going to lay low and see what happens.

1040 Packages from the IRS.

The year after I first used a computer program to prepare my Fed Inc taxes, the IRS stopped sending me the annual 1040 package.

They are well aware that I use a tax program, because they want me to file online. So far I have always printed the entire set of forms and submitted it in human-readable form.

Certainly going to do it that way this year. Minor change: certified mail, return receipt.

Paranoia,

PLEASE, you're going to make me wet myself! (gut what's a fud?)

Just a postscript. To those who say "Your employer sends you the forms..." I know this gang...the point was was that my employer that I haven't recieved from is The Federal Government!!! The IRS produces the forms for the military as if we were IRS employees!!! But hey...they don't want to give me my form...fine an' dandy. No tickey, no washee. Just don't ever expect to see me pay taxes again for the rest of my life...

-- Billy Boy (Rakkasan101st@Aol.com), January 18, 2000.

I got my forms...but we are both waiting on our W2s. One ONE of us does work for the .gov. Would like to get a jump on this, because we usually get money back...and I want mine before anyone else gets theirs! Bwhahaha. -kirsten

I posted this elsewhere, but let me post it here.

FWIW, the IRS (and state) stopped sending me forms the year after I began filing electronically. It makes sense. Why send me forms, and waste all that paper, if I'm not going to use them anyway. So for those of you who have always gotten forms in the mail, did you file electronically last year?

Now, as to W-2's for 1999. I KNOW, from first hand experience, many companies that determined that getting paychecks out the door was the number one priority for 1/1/2000. Efforts focused on this task, whether it was remediating old systems, or installing new ones.

The year-end reporting routines were to be looked at AFTER that first priority. For some companies, that is only happening now. So it does not surprise me in the least to hear that employers are not getting w-2's out as quickly as they normally do.

Will they make it by 1/31? I'm sure some will, and I'm just as sure some won't.

Keep us up-to-date! (Ihaven't received mine yet, either).
