Y2K barely bugged Nebraska businesses

BY KARA G. MORRISON Lincoln Journal Star

Three business days into the new millennium, only a handful of minor Y2K problems appeared to be bugging Nebraska businesses.

A few offices, including one Lincoln travel firm, found a telephone voice mail glitch that erased messages when internal clocks failed to recognize Jan. 1, 2000. The voice mail systems -- all of which were more than 6 years old -- deleted messages left after Dec. 31 because they were seen as too old.

Jay Wilkinson of Lincoln, who heads the Nebraska Coalition for Millennium Compliance, said two Omaha businesses with old credit card scanners had to call credit card companies when cards were declined. And some cash registers printed the wrong dates on receipts after Dec. 31.

No meltdown. No major chaos. More pest than plague. Welcome to Y2K. Still, Wilkinson -- whose 50-member coalition plans to disband after a farewell party this month -- said Y2K preparations were not for naught.

"I've heard of numerous cases of erroneous data, which is going to be the biggest problem with Y2K from here," he said. "We are not going to fully understand the problems that come out of that for weeks or months down the road."

Tim Williams, computer repair manager at Sperry TV in Lincoln, said a couple of customers have requested Y2K fixes this week for computers with Windows 95 operating systems. Williams said Windows 95 has a few glitches that can be easily fixed with an update.

"We've had a few on-site jobs, mainly with some of the schools and stuff, but for the most part I wouldn't say a lot," he said. "I think it's going to take awhile for some of those problems to show up."

Williams said Windows 95 operating systems didn't shut down Jan. 1, but the system has some problems, such as being unable to find files by date with creation dates after 1999.
