OT Anyone know anything about Madalyn Murray O'Hara???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Now a days when I bring up her name people say WHO?

I have wondered for years what ever happened to her. She was a noisy militant athiest who said some pretty outrageous things, but one day she disappeared from the public fourm. Do you know if she is alive or dead?

Can anyone else out there tell me anything about this? (I went to the site and the only thing I found was books for sale. I don't want to buy a book from an "unknown" site, I just want anyone who has read press stories from the past to give me a few details...) Thanks

-- Jenny (HomeFor@Good.Now), January 16, 2000.

This is all off the top of my head, so take it with a grain of salt.

Well, she suddenly disappeared, I believe a couple of years ago...

Current status is that I think the police are confident she was murdered, yet have been unable to find a body, and I believe they have some sort of associate of hers either suspected or already arrested for it.

It's O'Hair, not O'Hara. She was a famous athiest. I think she's dead.

From: Y2K, ` la Carte by Dancr (pic), near Monterey, California

I have not followed this story very well; it's hardly been covered in the media, as far as I could tell. As I recall, Madelyn Murray O'Hair disappeared along with her grown "kids" Jon Murray and Robin (I don't remember her last name).

Ms. O'Hair founded the organization American Atheists and lead it for many years before turning the reigns over to her son a good decade or more ago. I've just written to them at their Contact Us page, to see what they have to say about it, if anything. Curiously, there's no mention of it on their website, that I could find.

I'll post here if I get any information about it that I consider reliable.

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), January 16, 2000.

Sorry, make that American Atheists

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.homepage), January 16, 2000.

It's O'hare.

She is dead, and thus, no longer an athiest.

Her son and two associates skimmed funds for two years, were caught, but prior to being charged, took her for a little journey. Remember Jimmy Hoffa? Same outcome...

-- Joseph Almond (sa2000@webtv.net), January 16, 2000.

funny but tragicly true Joseph. she is NO LONGER AN ATHEIST. one of her sons did not follow in her footsteps and has a christian ministry and is rather outspoken about the damage he thinks his mother did. he was the kid for which her original suit was filed. i think she disowned him but at least didn't threaten to kill him like LARRY FLYNT HAS DONE TO HIS CHRISTIAN DAUGHTER because she exposed his/and his buddies' (I think it was his?) sexual abuse of her along with other aspects of his lifestyle. nice guy.

i think they have filed charges in the case too.

personally, i think it is a terribly ironic ending and i am sorry to see she never changed her beliefs and reconciled with her son.

-- tt (cuddluppy@aol.com), January 16, 2000.

oh, sorry to go on but you know how i am....

heard an interesting second hand story about her in church one day. our preacher is friends with a well known christian theologian. one day, when the theologin was a young college student, he went to hear Madelyn speak. at the end of her talk, she provided the opportunity for questions.

this kid stood up and said, "Miss O'Hair, of all the knowledge in the world, what percentage of it would you say you personally possess?" she thought for a minute and said, "10%". (That's funny huh!?) So then the kid said, "So you admit that you do not possess the other 90% of the potential knowledge in the world?" She reluctantly answered "Yes". He went on, "Miss O'Hair, is it possible then, that the knowledge of God exists somewhere in the 90% of the knowledge which you DON'T possess?" To which she replied, "Next question."

I'm sure there was a question of a lot of missing gold, owned by Ms. O'hare. (What really IS the correct spelling....I thought it was O'Hare. Could be wrong. Anyhow, sounded like there was some question of whether she was murdered for the gold.

Jenny, here is the web address of Madelyn Murray O'Hair's Christian activist son, William J. Murray. I just briefly checked his site, to be sure it's still on the web, he did have several links on it about his mother's disappearance. Don't know if they are still there or not. He always hoped and prayed his mother would repent and come to the Lord. Address - http://wjmurray.com/ (sorry can't find instructions for making link) Virlie

Sad and frightening. I have heard from a reliable source that the e disappearance of the three bodies has something to do with three blue 55 gallon drums?! I hope not for their sake.

-- lurking, as usual (friendsIknow@heard.com), January 18, 2000.

She was killed by fellow atheists. They've confessed, and tests have confirmed the identity of the remains. Isn't it strange, after all those years that she was purposely trying to start fights, even saying, "I love a good fight," then charging "Christians" with persecuting her? Christians don't believe in murdering their enemies, but apparently her fellow atheists didn't have any bothersome "Commandments" to constrain them.

-- D. D. Helbling (judah74@hotmail.com), May 21, 2002.

I saw something on Court TV last night that indicated that the bodies of Madelyn O'Hare, her son and granddaughter Robin have been found. At least, what's left of them. They've got some fellow atheist in custody.

-- Kathy Dufault (ub402920@hotmail.com), June 13, 2002.

I saw the Forensic Files episode on Court TV last night. David Waters, an ex-con, was a former office manager for Madalyn O'Hare's organizatin. She fired him for embezzling $50,000 from her organization, then wrote an inflammatory article about him.

Waters and two other ex-cons kidnapped Madalyn, her son and grand-daughter. Waters had the son withdraw $600,000 from Madalyn's organization, then "disappeared" them.

The son's car turned up later. The guy who had bought it identified the seller as one of the ex-cons, rather than Murray as he had claimed to be.

Later a headless, handless body was found in the river.

A detective, following a hunch, aired the story, thinking the body could be the seller of the car.

Waters' girlfriend read (or heard) the story and went to the police. She told them of a storage facility and big drums. On inspection of the facility detectives found a minute blood spot that DNA testing proved to be a combination of Madalyn and her son's blood.

Waters was arrested and eventually led police to a secluded area where the remains were buried---all three Murrays plus the head and hands of the murdered "buddy".

The motive was concluded to be revenge, with the $600,000 being a bonus. Ironically, the money was stolen from Waters.

-- Helen Gray (helengray@jobe.net), June 13, 2002.

I heard that a man who worked one of the O'Hair ranches killed her and her son because he wasn't getting paid enough. Then he buried them in a hole in the middle of no where. A couple years later, police discovered the bodies and charged the man for murder.

all i know is that only God will ever know when were she had disapeared. Yes she was not the most "bright" person or the most "normal" person but unfortunatly she knew what she was doing and what she was saying and knew what she was geting herself into. She didnt like the fact that how people worshiped God but like that saying goes God does not punish but does give his consequences hard. she had what she was coming. In my opinion we shouldnt worry how she dies but be thankful that shes out of this world and our lives. Dont worry about it.

1) Madelyn Murray O'haire (a college graduate with no felonies or serous misdemeaners in her record) was murdered by John Waters (a Christian and an ex-convict). 2) A second man, Gary Karr (also an ex-convict) was also charged in the crime. 3) Despite Karr's claims that the O'haire family had embezzled money from the athiest organization and fled the country, her body was found in 55 gallon drum, along with her missing relatives. 4) Many religious websites still carry information supporting the theory that she embezzled money from her own company and fled the country, despite evidence to the contrary. 5) O'haire was in good financial standing, with a record of honoring her contracts. She had no motive to embezzle money. 6) Waters was an ex-convict, drug-addict, and gambler. 7) Both Karr and Waters hoped to play off of the public misconception that athiest cannot have morals because the do not believe that supernatural beings will punish them in the afterlife for thier moral transgressions. This was a successful ploy as they avoided the death penalty.

Draw your own conclusions. Just try to use the facts instead of making them up.

Athiest all go to hell anyway. you dont know she didnt steal that money. Dont beleive ever thing you read dude. All the crime now that got worse after the school prayer got taken out was because of Ohaire. I hate these people they are conspiring to take away all of the beliefs that our founding fathers based our country on, like the TEN COMMANDMENTS. Read your King James fool.

-- Carl (cem1701@msn.com), August 14, 2003.

In Boston, Massachusetts the Boston Archdiocese formally admitted that 50 or so priests were molesting children. The church higherarchy covered up for them for years moving them from parish to parish as people discovered their crimes.

Catholicism is the oldest Christian organization isn't it?

I don't think O'haire molested children or tried to convince people to give her money so that they could appease supernatural forces.

I think that O'haire simply fought to seperate religious dogma from what is supposed to be a secular institution. That actually helps to support all of our rights to worship whatever God or Gods we choose rather than just yours.

Hmmmm....

-- Facts & Principles (bottle74@email.com), August 14, 2003.

Your asking for it now. Christian values are the foundation of the United States of America and O'haire really hurt our country by forcing our children away from prayer. If you ask me, Athiests are alot more likely to do all of that non-sense. I am not going to even try to sink to your level about that child molester non-sense you are smoking crack if you believe that.

Athiests are sick people and you cannot trust them.

I don't really have an answer, except to agree with Carl, that all atheists will reap what they sowed in hell. I hope this woman suffered greatly in her death for the problems she caused this nation. If not she is suffering a great deal now. May God have mercy on our nation!

-- Casie Harper (casie_Gods_child@yahoo.com), November 29, 2003.

In 1995, Madalyn Murray O'Hare and her son, Jon, and grand-daughter were kidnapped by David Waters, who was employed at the AAS by O'Hare. First, Waters extorted about $100K from the organization, then he kidnapped the O'Hares and used Jon to withdraw over $600K of the organization's money. THEN, he tortured and killed all three of them, and buried them on a remote piece of land about 120 miles from Austin, Texas.

I think it is laughable that so many xtians thought of her ideology to be a threat to God and xtianity. Shouldn't a believer in god (not me, btw) also believe that their deity doesn't need the support of its worshipers to do its bidding? I mean, on one hand they say "God is all powerful!" But, on the other hand they are completely obsessed with the idea that God could be brought down by a little old lady and her opinions. What's up with that? Just who are they trying to convice--themselves?

Here's what Jefferson said: I contemplate with solemn reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State.

Finally, I find it very interesting ideed that, 9 years after the discovery of O'Hare's body, xtian fanatics are STILL arguing with her. Want to try an interesting experiment? Put "Murray O'Hare" into a search engine and check out how many xtian sites pop up, still trying to refute O'Hare's work and words.

Happy to be a heathen, diane

Diane quoted Jefferson thus: 'Here's what Jefferson said: I contemplate with solemn reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,"'

Yes, that's exactly what O'Hare was trying to do, prohibiting my free exercise of religion to pray in school... or in any other public venue. The ACLU and Secularists today continue that work.

We're not concerned about what she and they could do to God (i.e. nothing), but what they continue to try to do to us.

Thank you so much for respecting my First Amendment rights...

This is one of the funniest sites I've ever run across.

For those of you who bemoan the fact that O'Hair, the ACLU and the Supremes supposedly trampled all over the Christian beliefs upon which the Constitution is based, I've got news for you...The United Staes of America was deliberately set up along completely secular lines. Thomas Jefferson and many of the other founding fathers were NOT Christians, they were Deists. That's why the Constitution and the Bill of Rights do not make one single reference to God, or to Christianity or any other religion. Not one!

As for O'Hair and her son and grand daughter and how they ended up, murdered and dumped into 55 gallon drums which were sealed and then abandoned, I thought it was somewhere in Arizona. I know it couldn't have been in Texas because if it had been, George W. BushLite would have immediately freed the three murderers and given them medals...and then dug up the O'Hair remains and executed them all over again!

Really shows the compassion of religious people that they can resist to throw in accusations about the morality of Atheism when the subject of the murder of Madalyn Murray O'Haire is brought up. Who needs turning the other cheek when you can just make lewd comments about a women who went well out of her way to make Atheistic life in secular America a little bit bareable, even when America has lost its way of secularism and prosteltyzers are there on every corner to tell us we're going to their Hell.

By the way, Im an Atheist. I have never burned down an orphanage, nor have I ran a car through a retirement home. I guess Atheists are really not the blood thirst monsters that you guys wish we were. Oh no, looks like we're just as human as the rest of you :-)

-- Daniel (hiphopdan2@hotmail.com), April 10, 2004.

I found her name in a sermon i was preparing in the good old UK. I dropped her name into a search engine, and found this site. Now i've never heard about her till today, and i've read all the comments, and i would have to say that there are quite a few christians, who were being hypercritical. Why can't we just accept that everyone has there own opinion, on everything. I dont know who killed this woman, and weather she did a load of damage to the christian faith or not, but in the end, we will all find out what the truth is in the end. Be it discovering a God exists or not.

In response tho to a comment bout christians feeling they have 2 do work for God despite God being all powerful and can do anythin. I have this to say. A Christian basically wants to glorify God, and we are prepared to give up our life for him. We let God take our life, and use us to further his works on earth. Our bodies are Gods tools on this earth. And yes God can affect the earth without our help, but tell me, how many of u would turn down somebody, who was willing to do anything you wanted them to do?
