What are some of your favourite movies from the last decade or two?

My favourite is Star Wars because it had lots of special effects never seen before.

Oooo! You just reminded me of my all-time favourite science fiction movie, The Black Hole starring Maximilian Schell.

I must've gone eight times to the movie theatre to watch that one.

Willy wonka and the chocolate factory, and Harold and Maude come to mind.

Well, here are the top five, of the ones you failed to mention, from each decade:

The 80's - "Raging Bull" (1980) "Wall Street" "Blade Runner" (1982) "Full Metal Jacket" "Witness"

The 90's - "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1997) "The Opposite of Sex" (1998) "Swingers" "The Shawshank Redemption" "Gods and Monsters"

Christine, have you seen Searching for Bobby Fischer? Your list made me think you might like that one. How about Brazil?

Oooo... I'm going with one of your choices. I adored The Cure!

I thought of a few more this morning.

Choose Me (1984)

The Indian Runner (1991) which I believe was Sean Penn's directorial debut.

Higher Learning (1995), gotta love any movie that has Busta Rhymes. And Omar Epps.

And I was reminded this morning that I kind of think, Corrina, Corrina is a cute movie.

I've never seen Searching for Bobby Fischer, but on your recommendation, Mike, I will.

Gods and Monsters was awesome. It was a good example too of what would happen if Brendan Fraser was more choosey about his roles. He's like a young Michael Caine that way. Oh, I just remembered With Honors was a pretty good movie.

Any movie with Busta Rhymes? What about "Who's Da Man"?

Well, I watched "A Midsummer Night's Dream" last night, with Michelle Pfeiffer and Stanley Tucci, and while it was very enjoyable, it wouldn't make my top 10 list...however, it reminded me of one that would - "Henry V" starring and directed by Kenneth Branagh. I was going to mention that this movie was the first one to bring Shakespeare to life on the screen for me, but I'm wrong - that would have to be "Romeo and Juliet" by Franco Zeffireli, which, as timeless as it is, falls in movies from the sixties (I saw it in the 70's). In a moment of truth, I also have to admit to an admiration of the movie adaptation of "Jesus Christ Superstar"...hey, it was shot by a Canadian, ok? Oh, ok, one more..."The Last Temptation of Christ", starring Willem Dafoe. That's it...for now.

Jesus Christ Superstar nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah!

That's me singing.

Michael, Michael, shot by a Canadian or not, that is like admitting your all time favourite movie is Hair.

But maybe I should shutup, after all, Flashdance is in my 80s list and it is just as goofy.

And am I the only one who thinks Shakespeare should stay on the stage?

-- Christine (chris@mail.gta.igs.net), January 17, 2000.

Michael, I loved Henry V. I never found Shakespeare's language so transparent as with that movie. Every other time, I had to translate the words in my head. With Henry V I just understood.

-- Eric Frazier (ef@kwinternet.com), January 17, 2000.

When filmed as the original text, yes Shakespeare should stay on the stage. Even Branaugh, who has done one or two adaptations that are very good, is spotty at times ("Hamlet" for instance).

However, there's a whole slew of films that adapt Shakespearian themes and story lines into whole new beasts. "The Lion King" (Hamlet), "10 Things I Hate About You" (Taming of the Shrew), and several others, those are just the recent ones.
