Canon Equipment Rumours

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

Once again the Nature Photography section of photo.net is being cluttered up with interesting, but misplaced, speculation on the latest rumours of new Canon equipment. Now that I am a card carrying Canon owner I though I might add a Canon Equipment Rumour subject to this forum just as a Nikon equipment rumour was added earlier. So, if you wish and if the forum manager doens't mind, post your rumours here. Please no bashing of other brands.

I guess I'll indulge everybody again. Keep it nice. Life of this thread depends on civility. the Nikon thread took on a life of its own and ended up staying...

I'll bite. What's the rumor this time? New pro body?

-- John O'Connell (joconnell@adelphia.net), January 14, 2000.

Yep. New Canon EOS 1/3 gonna be introduced late february. Got it staight from my cusin Vinnie, who knows a guy that has a close friend of an associate's sister in Canon's R & D.

Same reliable scource said we'd see two more new lenses, like nothin' ever made before. Faster, sharper & smaller than anything Nikon.

Don't forget, you heard it here first.

Stanley, I heard that Canon will soon release a new series of lenses that will have a smaller lens mount to match the smaller CCD sensor area in its upcoming digital body, which will blow the Nikon D1 away. The new lenses will be a lot smaller and lighter. For example, the equivlaent of a 600mm/f4 L IS in this new format will only weight 3 pounds and cost $1000. And by the way, all current EF lenses will become obsolete immediately. :-)

Does anybody know anything about the EOS 30? Will it be released? When?

Julius, The EOS 30 will be released after the new EOS-D (disposable) SLR is on the market.

Latest scuttlebutt. A FD-EOS adapter ring that will allow the FD manual focus lenes to be used on EOS cameras. LEDs in the camera will indicate direction to turn the lens and when correct focus is acheived. Dream along with me.

Here's another rumor from the www.techphoto.org. If this is true, it would be awesome!!!

"In the October issue of FV magacine (the most reliable source in Spain)they say that Canon is about to introduce a new 400 IS f:4 lenses wich will weight about 1.700 grms because of a completely new optical technology which will make it more compact and lighter than previous designs but keeping amazing optical quality. Obviously they were talking about the now well known DO technology, but notice they wrote it before it was presented in the internet (they had some secret info). Well, here it comes the news. In the same article, they say that about October 2001, Canon will also be ready to introduce an amazing 200-600 f:4, using this same technology ( they donB4t call it DO because they hadnB4t got that name), and of course it will be lighter and compact. They also say that this technology is much cheaper than fluorite, UD glass and all that stuff. I hope itB4ll become true sooner than October :-)"

Don't get a heart attack, Thang, even a DO 200-600 f/4 would still need a front element > 6 inches across. And why would Canon let you know what's in the pipe line one year from now?

-- Chuck Fan (chaohui@msn.com), November 05, 2000.

Chuck, I don't mind about the weight/size of the lens. It's a small price to pay for great images. I just love the Zoom range. After the 80-200L, 200-600 would be an ideal zoom lens/range for me. I have been waiting for this zoom range for so long. At f4, I can be sure that it will still autofocus with TC 2x attached on an EOS3/1V body.

"And why would Canon let you know what's in the pipe line one year from now?"

Chuck, I merely quoted this from another site. Besides, this is what rumor is all about, no?

After talking with some of the Canon reps at the recent Photo Expo in NYC mu guess is that the 400/4 is not the only DO lens in the pipeline. I don't know about a 200-600/4 but I'd guess it will be a fairly large, long telephoto.

BTW they didn't have a 400/4 DO on display. There are only a couple in existance and they were in Europe for another show. My guess is that if they don't have enough samples to display right now, they won't hit the market until well into 2001
