Buck in the Brush

Canon 1n, 300/4L on Bogen 3221 tripod. Kodak Elitechrome 100, f/4 in AV mode, shutter speed unrecorded.

Taken in Connetquot River State Park on Long Island. Other than slight cropping from top and bottom, this is a full frame image.

A really nice shot!! Well done.

I do however think that (at least from what I see), it's slightly underexposed.

And a catchlight in the eyes would make it perfect...

But really, it is a fantastic shot, so be proud of it!!

The bright colors in the background coupled with the softly blurred foreground make this buck "pop". If underexposed at all, just slightly, but perhaps that was the mood you wished to convey here. Big bucks like this are seldom around at high noon under bright sunlight.

In my attempt to make the on-monitor image as true as possible to what I see in the original slide on a light table with loupe, I usually add some contrast in Adobe. This can also makes the image appear a little darker. This whole scene was about as "mid tone" as it gets, making the proper exposure of the slide very easy.

I avoided fill flash in this shot for fear of burning out the brush in the foreground, which was much closer than the buck.
