Debit card problem

Just came back from grocery shopping at Top Foods (Washington state)...I almost always use our Wells Fargo debit card to pay for purchases and have had only one recent problem with it back in October when the magnetic strip wore out on it and I had to get a new one. Today I went to pay and it said on the machine "Not Accepted" but I was able to use it under the credit application...??? Anyone else having problems like this?

RAT: Check with the issuing institution about liability for unauthorized use. There is a fed. law limiting credit card exposure to 50.00 but this soesn't cover Debit Cards. Also if the institution covers unauthorized use check for their requirements to notify you of any changes.

This is a problem with the magnetic coding, and not a Y2K-related issue; the issuing institution can re-magnetize it for you.

Good possible Y2K post, though.

RAT:

Merchants _elect_ to honor debit and/or credit card (i.e., V/MC) transactions.

The one you dealt with in this instance has elected to only honor (process) credit card (i.e., V/MC).

This is not a "problem."
