Why does Aol keep dropping me like they do?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I copied the first thread to other day on "The Great Deception" which was 28 pages. I wanted to copy the one today, but after the 18th page of 99, Aol suddenly booted me off. They normally give me a notice if I want to stay online or not. Of course I do, or I would sign off. Then another window later Automatic Aol actived at this time. Then later with no warning what so ever bang the screen goes dead, and a sign on window saying you have been logged off due to inactivity. This has happened numerous times. I call their number and they have put me thru several sequences, but it still happens, and at the most inopportune time. I am wanting to keep a copy of this thread among others for a personal historical record. But I do not like to keep having to re sign on, loosing my place, or loosing what I have printed. Any comments please NOTFORLONG

The new AOL 5.0 is already notorious for these things. I un-installed it, deleted it, and went back to my first version 4. Works much better. Hope that helps =0)

You can send a document like this to yourself and then just read the thing at your leisure offline, if you wish, but this is impossible if you have a limit on the size of items of mail that you may receive.

Of course, it's always a good idea to get a real isp and use a real browser and mailreader. Lots of folks complain about aohell for good reasons.

If you want to find another isp, check out

and see what other choices you have. Good luck.

No help here, I am afraid. AOL is an ugly, clunky, piece of crap. After I have been on it for awhile my cursor will disappear. It will appear down on the taskbar and I can bring up IE and the cursor is fine. You may ask why I use AOL at all...it is where the most people are and I can view my buddy list. If it wasn't for that reason I would ditch AOL in a heartbeat. I can't believe as big as they are they have the ugliest icons and graphics online. Kyle

True, Kyle, true. Also, NotForLong, you may want to consider that those "free" CD's that AOL puts out are "worth every penny".

Try another ISP. Maybe SWbell? Or MSN? or Mindspring, even.

I happened to switch from another ISP to AOL and actually prefer it. As long as it's working properly. Mine is running great now. btw...It's my understanding that AOL uses IE5 as it's browser. When I upgraded(downgraded if you ask me) to AOL5, I was also upgraded to IE5.

Notforlong,

From what I understand, if you are in the response screen for a while, even if you are typing or printing, AOL thinks of this as inactive time. Try going to a prior screen, then back again, from time to time. This should keep it "live".

I have switched back to AOL 4.0, will see how it is. Thanks everybody, I just wondered if it was just me in my usual stupid mode, doing stupid things or were some of you having any problems.

I had problems with aol 5.0 so I uninstalled it and went back to my old version. Working much better now, but did you download the 5.0 from online? You should close out all other programs before you download or install it. Otherwise, you will have problems. Also, I have heard that 5.0 does not do as well with windows 95. Did you update your windows 95 if that is what you are using? I have still have windows 95.

Also, make sure to maintain your computer. Keep your files cleaned out, compress your personal filing cabinet, scan disk, defrag, etc. You may already know these things, but just thought I would mention them as a reminder.

Good luck! =)

Re: AOL, my advice is to uninstall the prog and not use their crash prone and slow services. It is much better to get a cable modem and tell the dial-up ISP's to kiss your ass.
