Exports totalled 6.9 million barrels worth an estimated 151 million dollars for the first week of the new year. It was a sharp contrast with the previous week's exports of 18.6 million barrels. Iraq had been exporting on average just over 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd) in this seventh phase of the oil-for-food programme, in line with export levels under the previous phase. Each phase is six months. The oil-for-food programme allows Baghdad to sell crude to pay for imports of basic goods, despite crippling UN sanctions in force since 1990. For this latest phase of the programme, the UN has approved 64 oil export contracts with a total volume of 202.2 million barrels. The UN Security Council on December 17 approved a new resolution on the future of sanctions and arms inspections in Iraq, lifting the ceiling on Iraq's oil exports.
