FRED? 70K gallon raw sewage spill in Pacific Grove, CA

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just heard on the 6:00 pm news from the Monterey, CA CBS affiliate that there was a 70,000 gallon raw sewage spill into the Pacific today in Pacific Grove (small town between Monterey and Carmel). It was unclear as to the cause, but they did mention it was the 4th one since October. hmmmmm... Y2K or FRED

"unclear"? No pun intended, heh?

Getting ALOT of sewage spills...how terrible, with the flu making the rounds, the last thing folks need are sanitation problems.

No...I don't think this one was FRED, I think it was CRAP (computer-related abnormal problem).

-- (RUOK@yesiam.com), January 12, 2000.

It can't be, well a "you know what"...

Because to be a "you know what" the spill has to be measured in millions or billions of gallons.

Or it would have to last for a very, very long time...say for instance maybe this long: Link

We've had a LOT of these just since the beginning of the year. I would suspect WAY above average.

Here's what it says in this morning's Monterey County The Herald newspaper:

2 spills in Pacific Grove A sewage spill in Pacific Grove shut down Lovers Point on Wednesday afternoon for the third time in a two months, and a late-evening waterline break broke holes in the road on Forest Avenue.

The 67,000- to 70,000-gallon spill at Lovers Point dwarfed the previous spills at the beach. The affected pipeline is believed to be operated by the Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Board, according to county Environmental Health Director Walter Wong. He said the line backed up shortly before noon and release valves forced the sewage into the ocean.

"This is a maintenance issue (which is) the same issue we raised before. The agencies need to carefully maintain these lines," Wong said.

... for the third time in a two months...

Because of the awkward wording in this phrase, I called to see if I could get some details about the timing of the first of these three spills. I was wondering whether it was more recent than December 14th. But I could not get the receptionist at the paper's city desk to provide a date. She merely repeated that it had been two months ago.

The Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Board wouldn't answer my question. They wanted me to wait to talk to an unnamed director who was out of the office until Monday. The Pacific Grove City Manager's Office receptionist connected me with a representative of the public works department who wouldn't answer my question. He said that "the director" is handling this matter and asked if I was calling from "a, uh, um, a, a concern."

Sorry... forgot to mention... in regard to the potential for disease (flu was mentioned above -- not sure how that relates) ... we got an especially heavy dose of aerial spraying this morning, and it looks as though they must have been at it very early because there's a fine layer covering the entire sky, in addition to newer trails. Why do they always seem to position the "X" directly above my house! =(8-0)

Mike is correct. This is definitely Y2K related.

DANCR...this is why rumors start. If only the folks in charge would answer simple questions like WHEN...we wouldn't have to wonder what in the world they're trying to hide? Why NOT answer your question?

The director called me. The first thing he wanted is for me to answer the question "Who are you with?" That's always a hard one to answer when you're not really "with" anyone. I said, "Right now? I'm alone, why?" He said, "Oh, nevermind. You're not a reporter, are you?" Rather than answer that question I asked one in return. "Would that make a difference?" "No," he said, "The answer to your question is October 25th.

I am going to go in to the library to see if there was any coverage of a spill at that time. I certainly don't remember one. Today's article spoke of it as if it was something they had covered at that time. Yes, beej... it does pay to turn up rocks. You never know what kind of "bugs" you'll find under them.

I visited the library and confirmed that there were eleven articles about sewage spill in Pacific Grove, including five dated in October. I didn't have time to read them, but I'm satisfied that this problem dates back to then. I thought I was on to something because of the mysterious behavior of the various agencies who would not co-operate.

Conspiracy kooks? Y2K doom and gloomers? Maybe none of you remember that 10 years ago there were several sewage spills off the coast in Monterey County that went as high as 500,000 gallons. Gee, maybe that was Y2K too....
