MILLENNIUM BUG: Japan loses track of mail

By Bayan Rahman

Two days after the Japanese government declared the country to be a millennium bug-free zone and disbanded its Y2K task force, the Posts and Telecommunications Ministry on Friday admitted its mail service had lost track of registered post since January 1 because of computer problems.

The problem arose because Matsushita Communication Industrial failed to install Y2K software at 146 of more than 6,000 post offices across the country. But the company said delivery had not been affected. The ministry said the tracking of registered mail would resume today and that it was not aware of any post being lost or delayed.

Other incidents this week included seven instances of Y2K-related problems at Japan's nuclear power plants, still reeling from the country's most serious nuclear accident at Tokaimura in September. But the government said all the incidents were minor and did not affect plant operations.
