Redneck update

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

First off the bad news. Dumb and Dumber passed away just before the rollover. The front pond had frozen over so the poor guys had no way to escape danger. Don't know if it was a bobcat or cyotes but they are gone just the same. Our 12 year old enjoyed chasing them in the pond and they played catch me if you can with him. They didn't much like strangers, heck they didn't much like me. Last spring one, don't know which one as only our 12 year could tell one from the other, slammed into a fence in their bold charge after movers who were delivering fruniture. I remember when we first got our rottie. We would put food out for him in the evening at which time Dumb and Dumber whould put the fear of God into him. He would crawl under the van and they would eat his food. All in all they were pretty good guys except when we got home in the evening and then it became a challange to walk into the house with clean shoe soles. Oh, I forgot to mention Dumb and Dumber were our guard geese. I shall miss their honking.

Now that deer season is over with we are starting to see deer again. The other night coming home there were 15 to 20 deer down the road from the house in a bean field. My wife watched a buck pushing several does thru the back pasture while looking out the kitchen window. This got me to thinking. If I had half the smarts some of these big old bucks have I would probably be earning what I think I'm worth.

Am still working on the rabbit thing. Managed to loose 2 litters recently, One to the cold and the other to a mother who who didn't care. She kinda reminds me of some of the semi human ones I've seen in town. She's now on my three strikes and your out program.

Just found the truck we've wanted at what we can afford. It's a 1 ton Chevy PU with full bed, extended cab and a 454 engine. It has hitches for everything including a gooseneck trailer. At $3500 for a 1988 in great shape I feel like we got a bargin. A new one would be 30K or more. I now feel like a complete redneck. If DD1 and RC are correct about the oil thing I will feel like a foolish redneck.

We prepped heavily for the Y2K thing, including 1500 pounds of food for the dogs, chickens and rabbits. Our largest investment was $4000 to fix the barn roof and add an open shed on the east side. This is where we house chickens, rabbits and etc. The barn is 40 feet long and has three rooms on one side with concrete floors and doors. These rooms are very handy for storing food, feed, TP, fuel, etc. We have come to the conclusion that from now on we will be as self sufficient as possible and keep enough food, fuel, TP, etc. on hand to survive for months w/o going to the store.

As I might have mentioned a long time ago we sold all of our stocks in the fall of 1998. I think it was a wise decision. One stock we did not sell because we considered it a minor holding. I have not followed this one stock for over a year, but for some strange reason I looked up its current price tonight on Yahoo. I also read the messages for this stock, CYTO. Guess what! I found out that we will soon be filthy rich. Don't think so? Well read the attached message from one wise investor in this stock.

I take back all the nasty things I've said about bubble.com. It really is different this time. There is no end in sight for this bull market. BC should be allowed a third term. No make that 4 terms. Lizzard Ranch will be renamed Dragon Ranch.

Sanity back on. Below is from Yahoo.

Whatever corrections along the way, we have what will get a great deal of attention, and you can't put a value easily on what we have. Consider CRA : the stock is up 49+ dollars today alone. How did this increase in valuation occur. Pure speculation. There is no way all those purchasers sat down and actually figured out what this company is worth. The market is excited about this area and it IS going to assign fantasic valuations. We are headed there,IMO. The beach, hell, some of you will be sitting off shore in yaughts if it happens. Hi Ed - I just came over here from the Left Behind Message Board, cause I'm about conviced the Rapture happened, and I'd been left behind - and I spotted this thread, and my blood pressure started going up - which is good, cause normally I have very low blood pressure.

And then I started reading it and started laughing. For a change. How nice! Got any more?

I was reading through the thread again, Ed. Reading about all you've done. Got me to thinking about the past year and beyond. We actually didn't find out about Y2K until March 1999, from Gary North. He scared me SO bad, and I told my husband: "We've got to move out of the city. We've got to have a well; we've got to be self-sufficient."

And of course we argued about what to do, and in all fairness to him, He didn't want to move to the country because of Y2K; but he did want to cut our bills, and we found out we could do it.

It's so funny, cause I remember it was about May when my husband was at our land. The only way we could swing it financially was by getting a trailer. City people call 'em manufactured housing; *I* call 'em trailers. But we did take the wheels off.(I'm giggling now.) We got two of them jokers - a 2000square ft *luxury* trailer, and a 1000sq. ft. "office" for my husband's business.

Anyway, my husband was at the land, while the land was being cleared and the well and septic were being dug, and I was at the house where we presently lived, and I got the latest Reality Check, e-mailed from Gary North. This was in May 1999. And IN this issue, he made the comment, something like: "Where would I live if I had my choice? In a mobile home. Which is good. Cause I'll be living in one in about two weeks."

That pretty much blew me away, but I am sure the people here who have read Gary have read his info on Manufactured housing.

I was actually worried about their safety - but I had to decide which was a greater threat - a possible tornado hitting us, or the Y2K threat. Well. I took Y2K very seriously, and my husband KNEW I was serious to be willing to live in a mobile home.

And of course it's nothing 'like' a mobile home on the inside. And we're in the middle of the woods; where the deer and the antelope play.

I was also thinking about what you said about the truck. And you're right(about feeling like a foolish redneck). We were faced with the need to get the 'big tires' for my black Mustang GT, a '97 (and still so beautiful, even covered with dust.) I decided that we should go ahead and get them, in late Dec., even though I was seriously afraid that the car wouldn't even RUN after the rollover.

I had always wanted a Mustang, and got my first Mustang back in 1995. And at the time I could have swung a Corvette. And I looked at them, only because the showroom was near our house, and the salesguy was going"Well, what do you think?"

And I was saying: "It's cute..."

But I really had my heart set on a Mustang - a black Mustang. And we finally found one. And boy was I relieved.

The funny thing is I have a - my Best friend - that I had been out of touch with since I had married and we kind of lost touch for awhile. But we were SO much alike, and she was such a blast. We had such a good time together, growing up. And a couple of years ago, my brother and I were talking, and he said:"Guess what kind of car Kathy has?"

I go"What?"

He said, "She has a white Corvette." I just laughed. Cause we were so much alike. Even separated, we were like twins.Obviously on the same wave-length. And I test-drove a white Corvette. But I WANTED a black Mustang. And at the dealership they gave me a tape of some 'cruising' songs, with "Mustang Sally" on there.

And, I agree with you,Ed, that self-sufficiency is the key. Which is why I ordered more fruit trees this past week. When they start producing it'll be almost like free food. And we have a 'lot' of non-hybrid seeds. But I want to get a book on local plants, because I have actually tested some of our plants around here we have growing abundantly and I don't know what the heck they are, but they haven't killed me yet. I'm sure they're edible, I just don't know what they are. But we have to be as self-sufficient as possible.

Because I really believe we are on a downward spiral, in this country.

Well. Don't mean to run on at the mouth. I hope the debunkers don't read this, they'll be calling ME fool. Funny thing is I'd do it all over again.

And I'm fixing to go outside and 'look up at the stars' with my husband and son. Later.

I'm a debunker and I read it ;-)

I don't slam people for moving into the country, or living in trailers or anything else. I'm stuck in the city with more concrete than grass and pondering a forced move to NYC, which is making me sick to my stomach. However I do have some good MO venison in my freezer, shipped via air, and a couple of rabbits. So that makes up for some of it.

I only poke fun at people who thought there Mustangs wouldn't start... ;-)

I can ramble with the best! ROFL Here's my story-a cure for insomnia, I'm sure! I found out of the possible crisis with y2k in July '98. We moved from near Portland,Ore. where I had a very successful horse training business to the back side of the moon in NE Oregon near La Grande! We bought a 167 acre ranch with 1/2 mile of river frontage and wild life galore! My husband works at Boeing near Portland and commutes on weekends. I have dusted off my RN skills and have started raising hay, pastured chickens, and cattle to make ends meet. Since y2k so far has been a non event, do we regret it? No way!!! We have learned so much and left such shallow people behind in the show horse business. My husbands goal is to hang in at Boeing till we can afford the lower wages here. I will be also starting a market garden soon if all goes as planned. Concern about y2k was just the nudge we needed to get out of the city. My favorite songs have now become "Lifestyles of the not so rich and famous" and "I'm going back to a better class of losers". We don't have a "a fairlane up on blocks" but I do have some holes in some of my socks:) And we do have 2 4X4 Fords. Morgan

Damn; HH I didn't like you but I am beginning to think I was a fool... heh, heh, heh... You seem to be a whole lot more human than I thought. :)

Ah, I only now had a chance to get back to this site, and found some neat replies on Ed's thread here; and yeah, H.H., I was Definitely foolish to fear my Mustang wouldn't start. This car has driven like nothing but a DREAM since I first got her.

And I agree with you, Michael, about H.H. A pretty nice guy.(guy?)

Also, bitbybit, YOU guys sound like you're doin' alright. I would Love some river frontage, myself, that's pretty much the only thing we lack here. But I definitely love getting back to the land.

Well, ya'll take care.
