OT, question...need assistance...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I can't seem to put a hyperlink on this forum, so I have to keep doing copy and paste of links. Can anybody help? Thanks much, =)

Quick primer:

The format is (a href="http://www.whatever...")Name_of_Link(/a)

The first rule is to replace the "(" and ")" above with the left caret and right caret symbols (or "less than" and "greater than" symbols, whatever -- on my keyboard they're the "," and "." keys, shifted).

Then, put that code wherever you want the link to appear. Good luck.

I've tried this a couple of times and screwed up. Let's see if I can do it this time. (This is only a test.)

(a href=)Interesting Link(/a)

Okay, what needs to be done to make it work?

There's also a problem with the automatic
word wrap in the text window. To fix this
you can put a carriage return (Enter key)
at the appropriate places.

<a href="http://hv.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-post-reply-form.tcl">P ost Answer</a>
can be broken up at these places

You do not need to break at every place
just enough so that it fits in the text
window.

I hope my formatting works :-'

Am I supposed to leave out the parens? Let's see.

Thanks, Spider. If I can't do it this time, I go back to cold links!

ahref= Interesting_Link/a

Old Git,

You need to include the angle brackets
< and >
also the space after the a is important.

-- spider (spider0@usa.net), January 10, 2000.

Hyperlink example:

(A HREF="HTTP://WWW.SITE_ADDY.COM")TEXT_YOU_CLICK(/A)

Now, everywhere you see a (, replace with a < symbol, and where you see a ), replace with a > symbol.

Your link should look EXACTLY like the above example, except you plug YOUR STUFF in where it says "SITE_ADDY.COM" and "TEXT_YOU_CLICK".

Okay?

Thank you so much, all who have responded to my question! (_)? (_)? (_)? @@@@@@ <~~~hot chocolate and sweet rolls for everyone!

I will give it a try. Been having problems with my puter, but it is NOT y2k, it was "ME 2K" ... something stupid I did awhile back and I've been trying to deal with it. TIP: Don't mess with the Registry unless you know what you're doing. =)

Well, okay. What with you and Wilferd (via e-mail) giving me more instruction, I ought to be able to do it this time. (Famous last words?)

Here's a hot link to where I learned it. Once I figured out the formula I taped it to the monitor. It is the only HTML I know by heart(quiet down those mutters of "yeah, yer website shows it"). Proofread it carefully before submitting, I once sent a bulletin board into some sort of spasm by a typo.

You folks seemed to have some confusion about the quotation marks. And the only space in the entire line should be between the a and the href, though if you are entering it in a form the software may break it up for you in whatever way it needs. However, you can have the spaces in the text you want to appear as hotlinked text use normal spacing, as long as they are cozily nestled up to the carets at their beginning and end.

(a href=$http://www.y2kmudwrestling.com$)The Squishy Mosh Pit of Y2k(/a) should get you The Squishy Mosh Pit of Y2k as a blue hot link. In this case you will need to substitute a left-facing caret for the two left-bulging parentheses, and a right-facing caret for the two right-facing parentheses. For the dollar signs in this example, substitute a full double quotation mark at both places, i.e. "

Dee, might I suggest that in future you make your header a little more specific, so that we know you want info on HTML rather than to borrow five bucks till Friday.

Good luck!

Have fun.

My apologies for sort of disappearing way back when. My desktop decided to commit suicide shortly after I posted the original. I do have a couple hints, though:

(1) If you're using Netscape, you can always select "View/Document Source" to see how others have handled it. I assume there's a similar function on IE.

(2) CUT the URL from the "Location:" bar and then PASTE it between the quotation marks in the "a href" statement. Saves a lot of typing and a lot of mistakes.

But I see you've figured it all out, anyway. Be kind.
