Y2K LIKE SLOW ACTING CANCER

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

We may possibly have the world's first ever digital cancer of the computers, I dont know if the paitent has a terminal case but all of a sudden the computers don't look very well.

Brent,

I agree. My computer was fine until today. I was overjoyed---it made the rollover---everthing is A-OK. Until today......

Seems the Crouch-Echlin effect is in full swing. If I put it in suspend mode, it looses time. It goes backwards. If the computer is turned off and rebooted, it looses LOTS of time! It booted to July 4, 1990. Some turnover---now I have to set this stupid clock every time I want to send email---will probably just leave it run now. When it dies a certain death, I'll get another computer.

But in the world of commerce, government, etc. these problems will become like a creeping cancer. Thanks for your thoughts.

Ohiomom,

Geez ... I knew Crouch-Echlin effect could cause some computers to fast forward in time. Never thought they might go backwards!

Good luck.

Interesting timing, I just posted a message elsewhere calling Y2K a spreading Cancer.
I'm seeing *lots* of small problems, makes me wonder.

I called it, "acid", as opposed to nitroglycerin, but I like cancer better. I really believe this problem is in its infancy, and that it's going to do some major damage. But that is a guess, and I don't really feel like it's going to ever get to digital Armegeddon for the entire world.

Still, Aremgeddon is defined mostly by our relative distance from Ground Zero of any given disaster/problem. So, for some of us it will be business as usual, while some of us may be in hell.

My computer has developed and ulcerated lesion on the monitor, and has lost about 20lbs. in the last 6 months. Makes me worried....

Sans beans,

O.k., O.k., that's AN ulcerated lesion.

Hi Brent!

Hey, we know there were problems, we knew remediation was nothing close to 100%, we know most people didn't remediate their PC's, we know most small businesses decided to fix on failure.

And that's what we're seeing and doing right now. In a week or two, date bugs will be buried in the normal noise of routine problems. Nothing to get excited about anymore.

Hi Brent! Take some deep breaths and repeat "Speculation is pointless. Speculation is pointless."
