TORONTO (CP) -- The experts said the Y2K threat wouldn't disappear at the stroke of midnight on Dec. 31 and a lottery glitch Friday had some people wondering if they might have been right.

The Canada-wide Super 7 draw was delayed by more than two hours Friday night, the first time it was conducted since New Year's Eve.

Officials with the Ontario Lottery Corp., which conducts the draw on behalf of lottery corporations across the country, said the draw can only take place when all those corporations say ticket sales have stopped and other conditions have been met.

The strict rules ensure the integrity of the draws, said Bernie Stuetz, a spokesman for the Ontario Lottery Corp. However, for this week's draw, Loto-Quebec was unable to acknowledge that it was ready until a few hours later than usual, he said.

The draw took place shortly after midnight. Stuetz said he didn't know the reason for the delay.

Another Ontario Lottery Corp. official said the glitch raised questions about the Y2K bug as a factor.

"It is the first (Super 7) of this year," said David Giles. "We were wondering" if the problem was Y2K-related.

Y2K or not, it sure worked out well for me. I work at a Montreal convenience store and was able to purchase the winning combination after the draw! I won $7 million dollars!
