Alaska, I want to become a Doula

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Doula.Com General Discussion : One Thread

Hi I live in Anchorage. I have been inspired by my Daughter, who had a home birth with a midwife. She is due any time now with a second child and will have a midwife again I am very lucky to be with her. It is a wonderful experience. And what an honor to be a part of the birthing experience. I have been look at much of the information on the web. It's great. I would like to be a part of any meeting that might take place here in Anchorage. I can see that there are many workshops in Washingtion, Calif. and other places. What is the cost for attending workshops on becoming a Doula. What is the first book I should begin reading? I hope to start volunteering my time with a midwife soon. But for now I was wondering what I can do on my own to work toward becoming a certified Doula.

And Thank you for making this space available.

Linda

Hi Linda, Being a doula is the most wonderful thing I have ever done for myself and for other woman. A good book to start with is Mothering the Mother by Klaus Kennell and Klaus. Another is the Nurturing Touch by Paulina Perez. Contact DONA at www.dona.com they can give you a lot of information. Good luck. Working with a Midwife is really great. Susan

Hi Linda. I know how you feel about becoming a doula. Hopefully you have found some more info since you posted this question. If not I hope my info will help. There is a doula group that meets in Anchorage about once every other month. You can look at the AK doula spot on the home page of this site. Contact Lesley Nelson. She is one of the founders of the group. It is called Alaska Doula Services. I have attended a few of the meetings but I live in Cantwell and do not have much opportunity to get down there. I may be hosting a doula training workshop here in Cantwell this fall. I know some people in Fairbanks who are interested in taking a workshop as well. If you are interested in finding out about more info please send me an email. Kristi
