About 1.3 million inch-long spring chinook salmon fry, 60 to 70 percent of this year's production, died Thursday at Cole M. Rivers Hatchery in Trail when an alarm failed to alert workers that a pump supplying water to indoor incubators had shut off during the night, said hatchery manager Bill Otto.

I don't know. The story just raises lots of interesting questions:

What was the cause of the (second) power loss? Why didn't the alarm work properly if it was reset and tested? etc. As usual the report doesn't contain answers to any of these intriguing questions or even any apparent effort on the part of the news source to seek answeers... (at least they could have gotten a "not y2k related" or "unknown cause" or under investigation" quote.

On Friday, January 7th the local evening news said the fish deaths were caused by a Y2K related problem, but the next day, Saturday, January 8th the front page article of the Medford, Oregon "Mail Tribune" did not mention Y2K. I've been trying to get a video copy of the news for Friday evening, but so far have not been successful....Kathy Warne
