Be aware that shutdown nukes are normally 100% power again in a few days...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I've noticed some posts where I believe people have a misconception that these nukes shutting down in the US since 12/30 are still shutdown and we should see a mounting power shortage as more and more shutdown.

In fact, of the famous "three shutdowns on one day" 12/31 (actually 2 on 12/30 and 1 on 12/31), two are currently producing at 100% power and 1 is at 15% power while undergoing maintenance.

Duane Arnold is still off and Salem (which happened yesterday) is still off.

If you glance http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/DAILY/psr.htm almost all the plants not producing power are being refueled.

John, you are a very smart person.

In fact, you're smart enough, good enough and, gosh darn it, people like you!

FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL! Thanks, John. I presume that any shutdown of whatever duration, counts toward your quota?

-- Gordon (g_gecko_69@hotmail.com), January 07, 2000.

John,

I work in the nuclear industry, and if there had been a nuke shutdown due to y2k, I would know it. As a matter of fact, everyone would know it, it would have to be reported to the NRC, and the root cause would have to be given in the followup reports. I have seen the root causes of all the incidents at the three nukes, and they weren't even close to being y2k related.

Catawba tripped on 12/30/99 18:21 EST due to shorted wires at the trip solenoid valve. Limerick tripped on 12/31/99 at 01:11AM EST due to a main transformer failure (caused by a failed insulator).

Vogle unit 2 was manually tripped from mode 2 (startup) on 12/30/99 04:36AM EST due to a rod step counter/Digital Rod Position mismatch on one of the rods greater than 12 seconds(unfortunately, step counter/DRPI mismatch of a rod's position is not an uncommon occurence). For a look at the preliminary notifications to the NRC on the above incident, see: http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/DAILY/000103dr.htm

Keep up the good work.

Regards,

-- FactFinder (FactFinder@bzn.com), January 07, 2000.

Factfinder,

Yeah, I've read those, I mentioned somewhere before that of the three pre-rollover trips 2 were obviously non-Y2k.

I assume all three weren't, but the rod misalingment thing on the Vogel deal seemed like it might actually have something to do with circuitry so in the interest of total caution I didn't claim anything one way or another on it.

In my archive-reading I noted you were one of the handful of people who made any sense, factfinder. Was another guy in the nuke post, nuclr-something, who was similar.

Quite frankly, I'm shocked the doomers weren't all over the incredible string of SCRAMS in May.

Glancing at the event reports, an awful lot of them occured during some sort of testing (of course, none were described as Y2K testing, but you know the doomers could have made hay with this)

LOOKIT all these failures has to be Y2K testing!

San Onofre went down and then went down again during a restart two days later...I'm sure that would have been "Y2K testing shows a problem they can't fix!" or some such nonsense.
