Net problem:

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I got a very threatening letter from one that uses the "MINDSPRING NET." He stated in my words, that because of what I sent him, his computer is ruined, that it froze up. Actually if I had the virus, how could I be sending he or any body else anything. I have not used any anti virus soft ware on my set and it runs fine. If I had of been sent a virus, it would have done to my set what he says was done to his. My question, is what he said possible, what I sent him cause his computer to freeze up, and mine not? Also, are there any others out there on the "Mindspring" net having problems,if so what kind? Response please

Actually, notforlong, I use the mindspring net in my alterego.

As for viruses, it IS possible for a computer to be infected in such a way as to infect others and not your own. It depends on how your system is set up.

As for being able to send it, THAT is what most viruses do! If you can't send, it defeats the purpose of the virus!

As for not using virus protection software: YIKES! (yikes)

I recently picked up a laptop CHEAP! Fella said that it wouldn't work right. i inserted a "silver bullet" disk into it, and found 10 viruses, 3 worms, and other resident malicious stuff! I HAVE to recommend that you pick some up. PRONTO.

One just cannot surf the web safely without it. THere are too many nasty little bugs out there not to!

JMHO.

Exactly what did you send him? If it was a simple text e-mail then he's wrong - there's nothing in a text e-mail that's going to cause his computer to lockup. Now, if sent him a file and you never scanned it for problems, he might have a case.

Here is the situation, I sent him things of the net here I thought would be of interest to him. I also sent the same thing to all those in the family group. None of them have complained of this. Is this possible, that a virus would choose to infect one computer out of several?

Notgorlong...can I make a suggestion? Anytime you get something in your Email from someone you don't know...DELETE IT. Don't send anything to someone that you haven't personally scanned for virii.

In fact-if you want to send someone something that isn't a personal Email written by you....DON'T. Send the WWW address if it's available.

I had a girl that the day after I met her online, began filling my Email with forwards....30 to 60 of them a day. She filled my inbox and I was losing messeges from models and other photo business'. I finally told her to stop and put a block on her. A couple of weeks later I was talking to another online personality who knows this girl. The girl was offline because a virus had killed her machine...cost her 3 weeks of downtime and $400. Do you want that happening to your system or do you want to DO that to someone else?
