STATEMENT OF SENATOR CHRIS DODD ON INITIAL Y2K TRANSITION RESULTS

January 1, 2000

Washington, D.C.  Senator Chris Dodd, D-Conn., made the following statement today on the initial results of the impact of the Year 2000 (Y2K) technology problem during the transition from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000.

"Thanks to the hard work of hundreds of thousands of people across the country and around the world, in every industry and at every level of government, our transition from the 20th to 21st century was, with just a few minor disruptions, smooth and seamless.

The success of the initial rollover period would not have been possible without the painstaking preparations that were made. The resources dedicated to reprogramming millions of lines of code, testing and retesting equipment, developing contingency plans, and educating the public were well placed. Had these steps not been taken, yesterday's achievement might have been today's fiasco instead.

But while the world has emerged on New Year's Day by and large unscathed from Y2K disruptions, total victory over the Y2K problem cannot be declared yet. Potential disruptions may still occur in the weeks and months ahead. For the time being, vigilance must be maintained.

And as we remain watchful, we maintain the lessons of Y2K. Assessments of information technology systems and inventories have resulted in streamlined processes, leading to increased efficiency and productivity. Industry and government efforts to prepare their organizations have brought about new levels of cooperation between the public and private sectors. This cooperation can now serve as a foundation from which to improve the security and integrity of the nation's information technology systems.

The Y2K problem has been one of the greatest management challenges of the 20th century and the American people have ably risen to it, giving us all a greater appreciation for the technology that touches our everyday lives, in ways large and small."

Dodd is an Idiot. We we did nit make atransistion imto the 21st century. this is the last year of the 20th century. The man should be tested for Alzeimers disease. Tired. Tired.Tired...
