Glitch Leaves MindSpring Customers Without E-Mail The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Equipment failure at one of the nation's largest Internet service providers left more than 1 million computer users unable to send or receive e-mail for about two hours Thursday. Technicians finished repairs by mid-afternoon, but customers of MindSpring Enterprises continued to experience slower service as computers processed the e-mail backlog, spokeswoman Kirsten Witt said.

She said the failure did not result from the Y2K bug.

"Sometimes, these things happen," she said. "With any piece of equipment, there's occasionally some problems."

MindSpring has 1.3 million customers nationwide. The Atlanta-based company is merging with EarthLink Network Inc., another leading Internet service provider, to form a company with nearly 3 million customers. That still falls well short of leading ISP America Online, which has more than 20 million customers.

Well, I had lousy service from Mindspring for 6 months, til I got rid of them last August and went to FreeWWWeb. (which is reliable ANd free)http://www.lsry2k.net/free.html i cant imagine what would cause the entire MS system to go down, though, whenever I had problems they'd always just blame it on a "local server". (well, first they'd try to say it was my fault, I wasnt configured right yada yada, then they'd finally admit to a server problem.(

MLS, your comments are accurate. I have had problems since they took over Netcom. I just started using Freewwweb and their web access is much faster than Mindspring. I plan to drop Mindspring soon. I doubt that this is a Y2K problem, but who knows.

WheW! Good thing it's not Y2K... that stock would have plummeted.

Mindspring has always sucked. I had a client I switched in August when they lost almost 500 emails in a one week period.
