greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm sorry I am such a newcomer to this site....just got my pc at Christmas...so please forgive my ignorance...a lot of good talk! But please tell me what a "polly" is!!!! I think I've figured out "lurker". "Doomer" is obvious...I would just like to confirm the origin of "polly" (pollyanna? polly want a cracker?) I'm sorry I missed out being part of this site the last two years...but I'm glad I found you now!

"Polly" is short for Pollyanna and is the opposite of a "Doomer". Get the picture?

Eileen: I don't mean to be rude here, but this is the umpteenth time you've posted exactly the same message. You've already gotten several serious answers to your previous posts. Is there a point to all this or do you have write-only memory?

Whats it to you Mr. Not your real email address...

Eileen, "polly" comes from "Pollyanna", the heroine of the classic Eleanor Porter novel about a young woman who is _always_ optimistic. A lurker is someone who rarely or never posts, just reads the info on a site. By the way, the "Polly-Doomer" labels, as with any issue of import, really represent the ends of the spectrum of opinion. I think it's safe to say the vast majority of those involved in the Y2K issue fell somewhere in between those labels in their opinions. Unfortunately at this point, anyone who bought a flashlight and a dozen cans of soup tends to be placed in the "Doomer" category.

Hope you enjoy your new computer!

A pollyanna is "someone who is unfailingly optimistic, often in a naive way".

In fact, many extreme doomers were actually pollyannas. They were unfailingly certain that it was the end of the world, despite any evidence to the contrary.

Eileen,
A polly thinks this automobile could be usefully driven for a few more miles.....

Eileen,

And a Doomer would store canned wheat in it.

I would bet that if:

1. Eileen keeps reposting the same question + 2. Only got her computer at Christmas __

3. She doesn't realize that quite how this all works and is waiting for an answer to her question in a new post altogether.

Verrrrry Funnny!!

A "Polly" comes from a "Hood" word meaning, appalling. This is when expensive techno-equipment like your new computer is used to ask this annoying question over and over again.
