This email from a computer teacher friend and his family in UAE...Self-explanatory.

*********************

Greetings Laurane,

No Y2K problems to report of any sort. A lot of work has gone into making sure there were no problems and it seems to have paid off.

My family and I spent the last 8 days in Oman roaming around possible locations......(personal). No problems were reported in Oman and certainly the date change in the UAE has been very smooth.

My Arab brothers have a lot of money to fix problems like this. Many large companies (airlines, banks, utilities) in the area have recently installed new computer systems to address the issue.

Thanks for thinking of us.

Best wishes to you and your family in the New Year.

Cheers, Jamie

I smell a fish.............

That's nice to know, Kevin.

In my original email to Jamie in the UAE I asked him about the Desalination Plants and if they would be OK....I could see that if the water supply was cut off, that would be their biggest problem. But it looks like it isn't an issue. Not fishy at all, just a family friend.

kevin,

That's not a fish you smell...it's the desert, what you smell is a camel!

Thanks for the update, Laurane. When you talk with Jamie again can you ask if there's any news about the Suez Canal?

In the same general region, a brief tv news clip mentioned a ship with problems (not y2k-related) in the Bosporus prior to its closing for rollover. Would you mind asking him if he has heard anything of it?

Rachael,

The Bosporus has NOTHING to do with the UAE and the Arabs don't get along very well with the Turks.

...and why would you care what Sue says?

-- Downstreamer (downstream@bigfoot.com), January 06, 2000.

A tad touchy today, aren't we, Downstreamer? Still smarting about your foreign-content confusion? Or are you unaware that sometimes people closer to an area might know something about it?

Tell you what: truce. I vowed to myself a year ago not to get embroiled in the sniping that goes on here. I'll go back to self-restraint if you'll mind your manners too.
