I'm curious: Why are *you* still checking this forum?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I was just curious about why people (pollies and doomers) are checking this forum still.

I'm a doomer and the only reason I think I'm here is that if the world is dying out there from a thousand cuts, some anonymous or not so anonymous whistle blower will let us know here what's happening in their company, although we haven't seen any thousand cuts reprted here (may be a few dozen from news sources, but none from the "inside" as it were), but I'm willing to wait until Jan 31.

But on thinking this through it doesn't make much sense to hang out here. I'd like to have the last laugh on the pollies (which may still happen I believe), but if the companies keep the world together with bandaides it'll make no difference even if the whistle blowers come here as the perception will still be Yawn2K. After all perception is reality, unfortunatly. If the companies don't keep the world together, we'll find out on CNN pronto as the sensationalist reporters kick in on cue (que?).

Be that as it may, I'll still hang out here (entertaining if nothing else).

So why are you still checking here (please identify as polly or doomer).

Spectator, I am quitting my job to go into research for the cure of psychological disorders. I have found this place to be an interesting study of many abnormal behavior patters: hallucinations, paranoia, depression, denial of reality.....well, I think I;ll be well prepared.

And like the gift that keeps giving, people like Brent allow me to continue my studies.

IS,

I'm a recovering doomer. I hang out here because I am addicted to this place and it's all Ed Yourdon's fault. [just kidding Ed] I keep swearing that I will never check this place again. I deleted all the threads and bookmarks. I keep coming back. I bet many others are addicted too. I'm a frustrated dimwit who is a worthless bag of bile. I wish I could leave, but I can't.

Sysops, please delete Alice Wonderbra. It's inappropriate.

I think this is an excellent question, Interested.

I'm still here because it's an easy way to pick up news tidbits, because I've become quite fond of the online personnae of some of the posters, because some said (loosely quoted), Y2K was not a one night event, and because sometimes it's a lot of laughs. Oh yes, one more thing, I had a problem with my computer the other night and Tom, Sysman and Satanta very kindly helped me out and solved my problem. I learned something new about the computer and I think that's wonderful, and I thank them.

As far as the baby spamming, Wonderbra. Stop being so judgemental and immature. While most of the posters reacted with some form shock, this person sought help in the only way they knew. I suggest you make an attempt to try and find a life that is in some way more fulfilling than the one you now have. I believe an appropriate phrase might be, Grow up.

Interested Spectator, I am here because this is history in the making. Y2k is a controversial and thought provoking event...or non-event, which is actually an event in itself considering the surprising results thus far. An eventful non-event...yes that's it...or maybe it's a major event hidden as a non-event, in which case...it is still eventful or uneventful. Oh my...

Perhaps this is real life drama...better than a TV soap in my opinion. Or, perhaps it is a marvelous display of human behavior when something shakes our reality. Something to be said for Cognitive Dissonance.

I am not a polly or a doomer, but I enjoy reading the debates and posts. I must be a Polloomer.

I am learning a lot about computers, and since I am a PC owner, I think it is good to understand the nuances of software and hardware. Heck...I never even knew what embedded chips were until I began following Y2K...there was a time when I may have thought they were something served with Salsa.

I also like to track the effects upon the economy and I am interested to see what happens to the stock market. Now there's the kicker.

Well, there you have it, my honest response. I guess, like you...I am an interested spectator. No harm in that.

Oh, forgot to mention that I like having a chance to put my 2 cents in on occasion. Nice for a change. =)

I keep checking this forum because I love to hear all the 1st hand reports. I keep expecting there to be more coming. I think I will keep checking for a couple more weeks and see how it goes.

Also, I have found this place to be full of interesting people not including the spammers. I have gotten more insights and laughs about y2k and many other things here. I feel a kinship to others who went through this past couple of years here.

What we went through was a deep soul searching sort of thing. I love the intellectual ramblings here. I love the humanity here. I tell my friends about people on this board as if I know you. I think the people who took the y2k possibility to heart and went through the incredible strain and hassle and expense of preparation for their families are the finest people I know. It wasn't an easy thing to do. Especially when everyone else around was getting manicures and going on trips and buying furniture. But we cared enough about our kids to put them ahead of selfish, selfserving stuff. I am so proud of what we did for our families.

I feel like the y2k issue is far from over. I pray that no one gets hurt as it manifests. When it really is over and we all move on, I will miss you all and carry you in my heart. (minus the idiot spammers and mean pollies)

I'm a ...no...no...WAS a prepared polly. I didn't even know this place existed till New Year's Eve when an old y2k list friend gave me Kevin Inscoe's site and scrolled down to the place. I was dieing to see what the doomers were saying at the nothingness of the turnover. a year ago I was much more interested in this whole thing but education from reliable sources ( mainstream newsmedia does not mean paganism or delusion or falsehood all the time!!)( the gov't really ISN'T out to get you all the time!!)Heard of Gary North a while back and wanted to know what was up with him and the folks that follow him. Belonged to a religion that was pretty much a legalistic, survivalist mentality ,trilateral commission, builderburger Rockefeller$$ we knew the real TRUTH:) Our church began doing some additional studies and came to the conclusion after 65 yrs of believeing one way that they were wrong in a lot of areas that produced a dominoe effect of erradicating the whole belief system. Talk about having the rug pulled out from under you. I was in it for 24 yrs. That's what I feel is happening here. We were taught to not believe in mainstream religion or their scholars. we looked to obscure scholars and such to prove our position.Sound familiar? Really had a conspiracy theory mentality. If it came from the mainstream it must be a lie or they were trying to decieve you into a lie. Oh I could go on and on. I think I come back here because I see so much of what I went thru when our church found out that everything we had pured our hearts and souls and $$$$$$$$$$ and time and energy into was wrong. It creates the HUGE need for a drastic paradigm shift!!!!!!!!!!!Reality is what you believe......... .not what truly is..The more the pollies and tolls come here and gloat the harder it will be for the doomers to get over it. the more I say stuff like this the more defensive they will be and find some other date, some other cause some other catastrophy to point to to make their case. I'll still come back tho. It's kinda entertaining. Sorry I don't mean to offend anyone. Betty Boop

And though mostly a lurker, I'm gettin seriously addicted to TB2000, both pre and post rollover.

blossoming writing talent in me, thanks to this contraption of screen and keyboard put together in Steve Jobs' garage so long ago.(or was that Wozniak's garage?!) (Bill Gates garage?,no, he's the one that jumped in later with what's the name of that software?!)

Well anyway, my writing seems to flow from brain to fingertips in a way that never happened before this contraption appeared on what used to be a toy train table my husband built! written 2 poems this year and was told they were good.

y2k? well my dear hubby became a somewhat-doomer along with me, the full-out doomer, but now he thinks it's solved.

Still coming here, with this sick yearning to see that it really is as bad as some predicted. I know its awful, but I kinda wanted at least a 5 on the 1-10 scale. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a mean-spirited person that wants to see civilization wiped off the face of the earth. The world, especially the world I know, needs a real good enema. I found this site on a link from Sanger's review of Y2K. I was accustomed to reading only y2k newswire, but their news service went downhill fast after the rollover. This seems to be the only place that has anything new and recent and, most importantly, not whitewashed as the general media reports have been (Not just about Y2k but about pretty much everything). I'm still here because, unfortunately, I have very little else to do at the moment.

I'll probably be going soon because this forum is becoming rather dysfunctional.

Everyone is so eager to have their 2 cents worth that new posts are psushed down to the page (where no-one looks) in a matter of minutes. On other forums, people are still responding to questions that are months old. Some threads become a forum-within-a-forum, but that never happens here. A post will get so many answers before the sheer volume of traffic pushes it into oblivion, and the only way the issue can be resurrected is by starting another thread (which only makes the problem worse).

The worst thing about this forum is the way the same questions & topics are posted over and over again; people just aren't interested in contributing to a thread that is more than a couple of days old.

If you just want to post your opinion then that is fine, but if you actually want people to respond to you individually then you have to post a question. It's the only way to get people's attention round here.

Hokie :), liked that.

I like the debate. I don't want the trolls to go away, I like slapping them. I don't want the pollys to go away either, every now and then one of them gets my attention and makes me think of something from a different angle.

My problem is simple, I like to argue trivialities and I like seeing my writing on the pages. I guess I am narcissistic.

I gave up some time ago the hope that someone was going to post something that would really clench what I view as the "end game" for me. That is simply never going to happen. Someone started a trend analysis the other evening, I am interested in seeing that when it is done. Otherwise, we have all the facts at this point. We are simply marking time here, enjoying the argument, and waiting to see of the last phase (or two) of this are going to cause serious problems. Even if it does, it will never be attribuited to Y2K. History may make that attribution but WE will never be able to make that assertion stick.

The argument is truly over at this point and the facts are indeed what is reported to the system, whether those reports have anything to do with reality or not is TOTALLY irrelavant.

-- Michael Erskine (Osiris@urbanna.net), January 06, 2000.

Mathew:

if you're still checking here, try using the "new answers" link at the top of the list of threads page. Any thread with a new answer shows up at the top of that list. But you are correct, the application used for this forum is a bit prmiative, but it'll do.

This forum is part educational, part sitcom, part drama, and the characters/dialogs are much better than anything you'd find in screenplay. Some comic relief, some stuff to tick you off to boot.

Some it is utter nonsense, some it stops and makes you think. Some info you take with a grain of salt, some content is deep, chocked full of references.

Better than television, IMO :-)

Blackout on Y2K related computer gliches in the media. So I guess that makes me a thoughtful doomer. I'm still lurking here trying to get the real story about what's going on around the world after the rollover as there seems to be a blackout on Y2K related computer gliches in the media.

I'm not a programmer, engineer, scientist, or gov't contractor, but I have enough common sense to know after 20 years working with pc's and the mainframe as a user that there's got to be those big crashes going on all over. Even if everyone has upgraded to new systems, software, etc, it takes about a year to get all the bugs out of those systems.

My own bank (who has a big sign up out front saying they're "Y2K Ready") tried to double-charge my account today with a check that had cleared back in Nov '99. No biggy, just told them to put all the money back and call the phone company about the check they caused to bounce. They readily agreed to all, but said it was definitely not related to Y2K, and if it was the Federal Reserve Board did it, or the person I wrote the offending check to tried to put it thru twice, etc etc.

My friend, who does her banking online, came by with the same problem, strange debits all over her account.

Anyone else having trouble with the banking system? LOL!

Interested Spectator,

First, I'm waiting to see how Y2K plays out -- say, a few months? But then, I'm hoping the forum can morph into taking on other topics (philosophy, religion, gardening, kids, parenting, politics, economics, music, literature, psychology, etc., etc., etc.). And I love conversing with most of the forum folks on just about anything, so actually I hope it goes on forever.

I was on a Y2K remdiation team for the last two years. I help support the systems where I work (a very back room person). Had my nose stuck in tech. manuals and the interaction I had with others concerning Y2K was not the same as I find here.

Those I interacted with while working on Y2K remediation tended to be rather boring just droning on about specifications, test results, etc.. We didn't have cute names for each other on the forums/lists I was on. Couldn't tell you what a 'GI/DGI' was at one point!! Feels as if I missed out on much of the fun. I've read through some of the archives and see this forum (and others) have had very passionate discussions.

Stumbled upon this forum, and others, surfing the web New Year's Eve while bored at work waiting for nothing to happen as our users tested (for the final time before Monday). This was much more interesting than what I'd been reading.

As I understand how the terms 'polly' and 'doomer' have been defined, I would be neither. I knew Y2K was a real problem (I worked on resolving it for two years), and I expected it to cause some minor disruptions. However, I didn't think these disruptions would be any more than we'd have due to a blizzard .. a few hours of 'whatever' not working.

Why am I here? Fascinated by the interactions. It's a break from all the technical information that I was immersed in. It's entertaining. Also, since I worked on a Y2K project I feel I can contribute some facts to some of the discussions.

I probably will not be here very long because we've got a back-log of projects at work and I'll be busy again soon.

-- Chris Josephson (chrisj62954@aol.com), January 08, 2000.

This place is awesome. The old-timers here bend over backwards to help people. When I first started posting/stumbling here they took me by the keystrokes and helped me through it.

I too have spent 2 years on my Co. y2k project. I am thrilled that catastrophe was avoided. I am still concerned about the "global" economy. I majored in Econ, then went directly into IS. The cobwebs surrounding my brains Econ filing folders are still a bit thick, but if it is to be "death by 1,000 cuts," I believe we will see it seeping out of the Economy like cold molasses.

Osiris: I am trying to create the Trend Analysis. It is difficult because I would like to compare previous years "systems malfunctions" with this years. I have been able to dig up some but I am definitely no Homer. Homer your my hero!!!

I love this place, and Boks place. I hope when the "glitches" get back to a normal level of activity we do morph into a board as outstanding as this one.

And Porky...Please take LL.

I came via Ed's home page and I found something wonderful! Intelligent IQ's sharing opinions and ideas. Together we are participating in history. I am in love with the wide spectrum in which this forum has manifested and evolved. The forum has lead me to greater horizons of information gathering. Far more that I could have achieved on my own. And I am thankful for those (and they know who they are) who have given so freely of themselves and their research.

Will I continue to lurk from prepped Pasadena. Of course! As with many others, I find this forum addicting. There are people here whom I adore, respect and admire. And this medium gives me the opportunity to surround myself with only the best. The regulars, the informed ones and the one's that I trust.

I love quick wits, dry humor, research, and kindred spirits.

I have to add this. I used to sysop a bbs that was up for years and had a group fairly similar to this logging on on a daily basis. There were whiners, creative writiers, philosophers, etc. that made up our online community much like here on TB2000. You do start to develop a mental picture (although it's usually desperately wrong) of the regular posters.

I had my own little part of our bbs system which was a Christian area. I had a general forum which was open to religions of all kinds to discuss spiritual things in general in hopes of generating a person to person understanding.

There was a self-proclaimed Pagan who began logging on throughout each day and was incredibly frustrating. As time went on, he got downright abusive and he left before I had to invite him out the door. The result of his departure? The forums DIED. With noone to argue or debate with, what was the point? It makes me think of a saying I've heard something like if you and I think exactly alike...that makes one of us unnecessary...grin.

I believe this is what makes TB2000 (fill in adjectives from above posts here). I've also enjoyed the interaction in the chat room BOK set up and hope it continues for a while.

I was in a state of blissful denial until December, 1999 when I began to experience mainframe problems at work. I then began to surf for info acquisition to supplement tech info. I fell into the forum and lurked on and off until January 1, 2000. When I determined that the site contained info not reported in mainstream media or on multi- national government sponsored sites, I began to pay more attention to the forum members' postings, and now monitor constantly as work permits. "Infrastructure" has many connotations depending on the matrix in which the word is employed. Massive sewage spills and fish kills may be immediately traceable to easily repaired glitches in computerized control systems: repair the glitch then explain to e- coli that it's time to go away. Adjust the salmon harvest in two years because the glitch was patched. Factor in the result of economic stress caused by delayed food and finances (and folks, welfare may result from uncontrolled economic factors as well as 'voluntary' unemployment:cf TAA)on an already stressed population and deny significant population impact of minor system malfunction. Assess delays in building and construction when hundreds of employees of the companies encountering the barrier are part of the equation. I'm not a doomer or a polly or a radical, but I do recognize that we are all part of a global ecology. Those of us who are not insulated by economic surplus, and those animal or physical elements of the environment who are "subject" to impact without recourse, are as important as any other component. Think that trash collector isn't your equal? Try taking all your refuse to the landfill three or four times a week in your nice new or one or two year old car and working that into your employment or retirement schedule. This same dynamic applies to the world of computers, that constellation we all so casually accept and call the "Net". The forum is an information resource. It's been more or less open. That's not true on government sites or in mainstream media. Some of us in this geographical area are making a disk library of incidents that appear to be related to Y2K. My count is now 16 floppies of text copies and I'm a newcomer. I love my comfort, I depend on my machines- my real partners-and I don't want my world to change too much.I don't want the general public overloaded with information that will frighten or stampede them-that would impact MY comfort level. But I'm a member of a generation that was born into a world war, gave a parent to Korea, a spouse to Viet-Nam, children to the Gulf, Bosnia and Iraq. I know finally that freedom demands individual accountability and awareness. Keep this forum going as long as you can. History is being recorded in a new way. Two generations from now the formum postings and debate they engender may make a tremendous impact! Back to mundane work. Mike

I have to say that I just found this forum since jan. 1. I am very interested in how this will all pan out.

I am responsible for 40 residents in a Home for special Care and of course had to have a contigency plan in place in case of a y2k disaster. Thankfully that did not happen.

I certainly was aware of the potential through family and friends of what could happen, but was not aware of the seriousness and the extent that many had taken, until after Jan 1 had past.

I was and am prepared for a 1 month shut down but by reading the entries here I am now aware that many had prepared for much longer.

I see nothing wrong with this preparation. I actually think it is admirable. No one should be embarrased about thinking of their family first, being a mother of three, and knowing that my family had to be prepared so that I could take care of the residents I am responsible for, made me more at ease, knowing my family was safer.

This is my first experience with any type of forum on the internet and I have to say, it is most enlightening, most entertaining, and definitely gratifying to see so many looking out for one another in a world that doesn't always show that others matter.

Thankfully for those not in a position to prepare for the worst, at this point, is seems it was not necessary.

Let us hope that those that did prepare will not find the need to use these preparations for anything other then a blizzard that knocks out power for several days.

At home in Canada hoping that all will be safe and warm
