Don't blame Yourdon or North

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I believe everyone is putting too much blame on the authors who created the myth and not enough blame on those who made it possible;

The people who bought it!

Adolph Hitler, Mussolini, Lenin all would have been as harmless as spam lambs if it weren't for millions of people who were willing to be brainwashed. The real danger is what Lenin called the Proletariat. The mindless sheep who had numbers but no power, who could be convinced of anything as long as there was a promise of empowerment. Those who fell for this Y2K nonsense are the same type of people Hitler brainwashed into thinking the Jews were the cause of the collapse of Germany. They are the same people that Lenin used for his "workers utopia". This is a dangerous thing, not to be taken lightly.

I submit to you the cause of this hysteria is the inability of these Americans to discriminate between truth and lie. The more preposterous the lie, the more they wish to believe it. Unfortunately, this is not a new thing. It is disappointing and frightening that in modern day America, the fodder exists for another holocaust. If an uncharismatic nitwit like Gary North can gain this much of a following, God help us when the next Hitler comes down the pipe.

Sincerely, M. Chip

Any updates on the Chemtrails or asteroids?

JoseMiami:

I seem to remember a fellow with your name appearing on this forum late in the year asking for help... I was one of those who shared knowledge and reason, and accepted you.

I can understand how you feel. But you disgrace yourself and disappoint those who helped you by your actions here since the rollover.

No, I didn't know what would happen. Neither did you. Yet here you act like the very people who helped you are beneath you. Stop acting like a child and take responsibility for your actions.

A wise man surrounds himself with advisors. But the responsibility for the decision rests with the man.

Mike: In terms of a national audience, Gary North was almost invisible. I'll bet that if you asked 100 people on the street tomorrow who he is, no more than 1 or 2 would know. Personally, I'm a North fan but I don't think he is very significant in the affairs of the country.

-- Howard Roark (howard@roark.com), January 05, 2000.

I'm one of the people who couldn't discriminate between truth and lie. For example, when I found out the governor of S. Dakota, in his 1999 state of the state address, said that the power grid would go down if, at that time, the century date change occurred, I took it seriously.

I knew that, if that were true, there would be a lot of electric utilities in trouble around the world. Sorry I'm not an electric utility expert, and I'm sorry the experts advising him were wrong. But I like my woodstove. And, by the way, I'm not burning Jews in my woodstove.

-- Bill Byars (billbyars@softwaresmith.com), January 05, 2000.

Hrm. You make a good point, Kurt, about advisors and responsibility at the end. However, rather than being an advisor, it seems here that you're turning instead into a lecturer, or perhaps rather a father figure seeking to place 'errant children' in line. Frankly, it grates.

Mike you may be right about what you say about us sheep. But check the statisics of firearm sales these last few months. They have been far above normal. Millions of firearms have been sold. That means that all these preps not only got food and water, they intended to protect these preps from those of your nature. This will not stop when all the Y2K hype is over, many more than ever before have this means and they will use it against any bastard that attemps to take what is not his. Because of this prepping many lives will be saved becase the deformed bastards that prey on innocent people are also exteme cowards, they will not attemp breaking in. Now more than ever they will not know who is, or who is not armed. I feel that if for no other reason it was worth it all just to get more of our citizens armed, so they can protect themselves. I know I bought another weapon, and I have mucho ammo to use it, and will not hesitate in the least to exterminate any vermon that should happen to try and do something foolish.

I purchased 1 can of tuna and some chips. (oh and a BB gun)....so look out!

-- chipper (fullyprepped@dot.com), January 05, 2000.

Yep - gun sales are up alright.... and nothing like teaching that mentality to a few more students.

The ignorance the equates higher gun sales with greater public good never stops disgusting me.

dontscrewme:

Then I suppose logic, human nature, common sense, and 6,000+ years of human history would be lost on you...

I suppose you know everything, but I suspect you scan headlines and then claim to be informed.

Don't screw me 2000----BYline Mike Blair,SPOTLIGHT,NOV>22 1999 A 500 million program to force 18.5 million Australians to hand in their firearms last year resulted in burgeoning crime and chaos. Aussie's were forced to surrender 640,381 personal firearms, including shotguns and semiauto 22's. According to the latest statistics in Australia, homicides are up by 3.2%,assualts are up by 8.6% and armed robberies are up a whopping 44 percent----need to know anymore about the results of gun control?

-- Ever Vigilant (Ever Vigilant@2nd Amendment.com), January 05, 2000.

dontscrewme; Soccer mom, right? Voted for ol' Billy Boy, right? Devout liberal, right? Mom, look, what happened at Columbine and in half a dozen other schools has absolutly nothing to do with the availability of firearms and everyting to do with latchkey children who have not been taught about the value of human life.

This blaming an inanimate object for the failings of those who use them is patently, clearly, very obviously, faulty thinking. It indicates the inability to find fault where the fault lies, with parents, teachers, religious leaders, and society in general.

You do remember that the swat teams refused to enter Columbine until the next day because the boys set booby traps all over the halls, don't you. Do you suppose by that logic we should now start licensing bombs, or should we prohibit them all together? Hmmm, wait a minute! Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that BOMBS are already prohibited.

What say we make another law about bombs anyway, it's the EASY out. That way we can push the solution to the problem off onto the law makers and continue with our ten am tea's without having to face the fact that WE as a society are responsible for what our children are doing.

dontscrewme, kindly get a grip. Here is how you start. Turn off your television. If you can't do that, atleast turn of those idiotic soaps you are so fond of watching.

You think people who have and use firearms piss YOU off? Well, Soccer Mom's piss me off.

Jose, No chemtrails in miami unless you count the gasous releases of the 200,000 crack and meth junkies looking for their angry fix!

-- speedy gonsales (sniff@theregoesone.com), January 05, 2000.

Chip; a bit strongly worded, not that I have never done the same... see above. Some good points in your post though. I don't think your analogy is entirely fair. I don't think there was a preposterous lie in this situation, but maybe ... sorta doubt it though.

-- Michael Erskine (Osiris@urbanna.net), January 05, 2000.

No flame, Mike, but really, who can say what went on inside those two guys' heads and houses, who did the Columbine killings? If someone pinned me down and demanded my own take on the matter, I'd be speechless, because I couldn't begin to imagine the potential combinations which went into what happened. The whole thing just leaves me uneasy.

As for Mr. Kissinger -- hm. I see you bring a lot to the table yourself.

-- Ned Raggett (ned@kuci.org), January 05, 2000.

Sorry, Michael as opposed to Mike. Them similar names, I tells ya. ;-)

-- Ned Raggett (ned@kuci.org), January 05, 2000.

Mike! You're entitled to your opinion! Thank you! And you have made some very good points. So North looks more like Jonah than Noah. Big deal.

However, Y2K was not just an excuse for people in general to get prepared. Those of us who watch the market and the prices at the grocery store, our employer's stock, our job security, etc. realize that even though economic disaster may not happen tomorrow, there is always the possibility of losing one's job. Which is called a very personal economic disaster.

As for the gun issue, keep in mind that not all gun owners are men. The dirty little secret about gun ownership is that many women own them too, and are very well trained by either the NRA or their local police department's instructor. Women just aren't as vocal about it. Just thought I'd put my two cents in.

P.S. I like my woodstove too.
