Gartner Group.....silly doomers??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

...THE GLOBAL IT INDUSTRY RESEARCH FIRM, THE GARTNER GROUP, EXPECTS THE YEAR 2000 PROBLEM TO CAUSE COMPUTER FAILURES AROUND THE WORLD THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR AND POSSIBLY INTO 2001 AS WELL. IT HAS FORECAST THAT 50 PER CENT OF Y2K FAILURES WILL BE SPREAD OUT OVER 2000.

THE UNITED NATIONS-SPONSORED Y2K DATA CLEARING HOUSE HAS ALSO WARNED THAT FULL IMPACT OF ANY YEAR 2000 PROBLEMS WILL BE LARGELY HIDDEN UNTIL MID-TO-LATE JANUARY.

THE DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL Y2K COOPERATION CENTER, MR. BRUCE MCCONNELL, SAID Y2K ERRORS WILL BECOME EVIDENT DAYS AND WEEKS AFTER THE ROLLOVER. (end of quote)

This opinion is also shared by IEEE Chairman Dale Way.

As I recall, this was the same Gartner Group that predicted 25% of all Y2K failures would occur in 1999. They were wrong about that also. This company is in business to sell predictions. No predictions - no revenue. You should look at their track record and determine how much stake you should put in future predictions.

Duh, Jim.

How can we measure what percent of Y2K failures have taken place before all of them have taken place?

There were failures in 1999, we just don't know yet whether they represent 2, 25, 50 or 98% of the total Y2K failures. (Judging by the fact that there have been failures in 2000, I would say we can safely rule out 100%.)

Happy New Year!

Celstine,

How many failures took place in 1999? If those failures were 25% of the total, as predicted by the Gartner Group, how many total Y2K failures will there be? It's a matter of simple math. The Gartner Group has been consistently too pessimistic in their forecasts and remains so today.

Jim, How many failures were there that are admitted as Y2K related? Does anyone know? Simple math with an unknown becomes algebra and until the total number is known you cannot calculate the number in 1999. Plus accurate reporting will be a necessity to know how many failures there are, ever. Please continue your studies and come back when you have taken algebra. Also a book on manners might be an aide for you.
