I heard a IRS radio spot on WWJ today advertising for the Detroit processing center for 700 processing personnel at $12 an hour and full medical coverage waving the new employee grace period to qualify. It sounded very urgent. Y2K related? I don't know. Is this a normal request have not paid attention to the IRS hiring practices before?

Gee wouldn't it be a windfall to .gov if they saw to it they could COLLECT taxes but had not remediated their refund system!!

Bear with me, this is an absolutely wild-eyed, crazed theory...but I think it will be proven out..

1) The economy is so good organizations are absolutely DESPERATE for warm bodies.....it's probably never been harder to come up with temp help or employees of any kind. The station I listen to all the time (An alt rock station in the DC area) is WALL TO WALL with employee recruiting. I'd say easily 4-5 times as much as even two years ago.

2) Tax Day is April 15, there are quite a few people who actually do get their taxes in early, and anyone you hire (especially the idiots you are likely to get from the avaliable labor pool now) will need quite a while to get hired/trained.

Again, this is a really "out there" theory by the standards of this board, but please consider it.

$12 an hour!!! Our local news channel reported this morning that the Cincinatti IRS office is looking to hire 600 folks at only $9 an hour!

I did a little part time Census work this year (easily the most disorganized clusterf*** of an organization I've EVER seen...pre-Y2K of course.)

Their rates vary wildly based on geographic location for identical jobs. They have an arcane system of calculating average pay, cost-of- living, etc. in a given area.

Similar to the way many companies/agencies assign per diems for travel; when I was a speech team coach for a University I got a much higher per diem when we went to a tournament in Long Island than in rural Pennsylvania.

I suspect average wages/cost of living in Southern Ohio is less than Detroit. And even if it isn't, the government THINKS it is which is what matters :-)

Quite honestly, I haven't ever heard of the IRS offices asking for this many "actual people" for one tax season - EVER.

Happens all of the time. The IRS is gearing up for the tax season. These are only seasonal hires and they will need to be trained. After the tax season is over, some of the best will be retained, the rest will be let go.

This is an unusual amount of hiring late in season...takes a while to train...usually hire in Sept. for this kind of work. Plus they have to do some background checks, etc.
