OT: Does anybody know any good forums for "self sufficiency" or "back to basics" or "Independent living" or such....?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I have tried the search engine and been unsuccessful. While I enjoy Timebomb 2000 and all of its regulars, I am worried that it may wind down and desist. I would like to continue in the vein that I have learned here and "hone" my skills. I have always enjoyed this style of living and the folks that practice it. I like the independence that it affords.

If you know of any forums or how I can find them, along these lines, I'd sure be grateful.

Thanks alot.

The Prep forum is discussing this very issue of becoming a self sufficiency forum. Go over there and put your two cent in. I am all for it. Taz

Funny isn't it? I always thought that my last 19 months was only about self sufficiency, and learning how to do things differently,...

This link used to be a good site for information:

There are some good sites out there...do a search under 'Homesteading' That's the new term for it I guess...Homesteading to me was akin to 'squatting'.... A good book to find that has a overall set of info is the Reader's Digest 'Back To Basics'. Came out in the mid/early 80's. Also, the 'Foxfire' books are good too, Here are a couple more forums....they don't jam everyday like here but there is a lot of good info.

Frugal Squirrel's Suvivalism Forum

Here's a recent post to that forum by Alan Hagan:

You all make some good points here. However, the one thing about Y2K that makes me foam at the mouth is the idea that seems to subsume the preparedness planning of so many that Y2K and its attendant possible complications is all that you need prepare for. If the turn of the year turns out to be a complete non-event, so what? If the economy keeps booming along and we never see the first hint of a recession or depression, so what? Life is not certain folks. There were very, very good reasons to ALWAYS stay prepared long before the first transistorized circuit was built to lead us into a Y2K problem and those reasons will not have changed a whit when we have scrapped all computers in favor of something better. Natural and man-made disasters have happened and will continue to happen as long as man is around to be threatened by them. THOSE are the reasons you should prepare for. In the course of a long life every single person in this forum (and all other forums) will need their preparedness program to get them or their loved ones through a bad place, AT LEAST ONCE. Forget Y2K. Just prepare because it's the intelligent thing to do in an uncertain universe.

Yes- I would find it interesting as well. Also- I was thinking among similar lines as a recent post by Count Vronsky/Blue Himalayan that i didn't have a chance to respond to; he was loooking for a forum to discuss a variety of ideas. I think IMHO, that there are a whole bunch of people on this forum that have many interesting thoughts and would love to see the dialogue continue- and not just regarding Y2k or failures. But rather issues such as self sufficiency, simple living, voluntary simplicity, etc, etc

Here is clickable link to:

The TB2000 Prep forum

There is a bit debate on whether or not to change the name to something like "The Self-Sufficiency Forum" Because so many participants are interested in that anyways regardless of Y2K.
