RAIL FREIGHT TRAFFIC. An update/rollcall please?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Over the weekend, there were several threads posted as to the fact that rail traffic was either light, or non-existant. These were answered by others who attributed this to the holiday weekend.

Weel, the "holiday" is over. Could we please assemble a series of reports on the CURRENT quantity of rail traffic, from those who live and/or work around the rails?

Thanks!

I live in the heart of central NY on the East - West line,I noticed a great deal of activity Sunday nite,4 trains-freights I think,Im about 1 mile from the line so I can only hear them when it is very quiet,I did hear one this afternoon.I would like to thank all the honest and sincere contributers to this board.

My report is the same as it was before. I live a stone's throw (OK, maybe a little further than that) from the track and trains (both freight and passenger) were coming through all weekend, through today. Trust me, at my house you can HEAR (sometimes feel!) each train coming by. There has not been an unusual lapse in train traffic.

I live by a track in Harrisburg AR. Traffic has been reduced by more than 25% here. I counted and watched the rail traffic because it had picked up so much in the months before the rollover. Now we are getting about 5 trains a day.

We live near a major N/S Union Pacific artery. We don't seem to be quite up to speed yet, but trains are rolling through.

I live by the Conrail yard in Elkhart IN . , I have been hearing them and last night I went by the yard 2 times and saw lots of cars sitting in there, but there is movement and it still seems to be a lower than normal from what I can tell. I have been hesitant to post anything on here because I cant really say if the trafic is down for sure. I do know that last summer when their computers were messed up that they had alot of trains sitting all over the place, inside the yard and out down the tracks. I havent see anything sitting outside of the yard yet. One thing that they did last fall that I thought was kind of strange was to put concreate road dividers on the trails that go along side of the tracks at the street so that you couldnt drive up next to the tracks . I figured this was to keep people from looting the train cars if things got bad. At this point I would guess they can move trains, BUT can they keep track of all the cars and where they go?? Who knows. I will update as I see fit ,but I will also hold back if I am not sure.

A freight train normally comes through here (N of Dallas) each morning around 3:00. Others during the day, but I'm not always here. Last night was the first I had heard in days. I can hear one now.

Ok,

I was out for a drive in the country Sunday, Bernardsville NJ and came across a RR crossing the crossing light on and the poles down. This was a quite country road, waited 3-4 minutes? Nothing, got out of the car looked both ways... Nothing, no train but lights stayed on and crossing guards stayed down? Who knows what it was, just an FYI.

Binghamton, NY: Norfolk Southern east/west traffic at normal levels. New York, Susquehanna & Western east/west traffic at normal levels. Canadian Pacific north/south traffic at slightly high levels.

Saw one Amtrack passenger train moving very slowly in Newport News VA today. Nada on all the freight cars we typically have roaring through multiple times a day. All freighters remain parked.
