USPS Mail Sorting Machines at North Texas

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This is what I was able to find out today.

The mail sorting machines at North Texas Mail Processing in Coppell were shut down at 10:00 pm 12/31. At 2:00 am they attempted to restart them. I was not there personally, so I do not know the exact nature of the problem, but they were not brought back to operational status until late Sat or early Sun.

They are turning out mail now. Reportedly, they have fixed the problem. However the flow of parcels and flats is lower than expected. Given the timefraim, equipment involved, past practice, and official attitudes; it is likely that efforts were concentrated on the letter sorting machinery, and that a temporary fix was put in place to restore operations. "Officially" there is no word. My personal opinion is that until there is a hardware upgrade, similar problems may occur anytime there is complete shutdown of the systems involved (ie power outage).

The phrase 'mail sorting machines' sort of covers every machine they use, don't you think?

Besides, they can do it by hand. LOL

Just wondering, are these older systems or the new ones installed over the last year or two? It could affect activities at another of my employer's plants down the road if the new systems are affected.

And BTW: I'm willing to bet it IS one of the new ones.
