Isn't it time to find a new soapbox?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

A vast majority of the Y2K panic mongers expected the worst come the roll over. So, it went off without the horrible repercussions expected. Of course, now instead of facing up to your error you want to drag it out even further. I keep reading "the worst is yet to come" theme over and over again on this board, when the "worst" was initially expected to be at roll over. Yes, things are going to happen, but ANYONE familiar with technology and the industry knows that Y2K or not "Shit Happens!" And regardless of the year computer problems would have happened anyway for one reason or another. There are a lot of posts here that look as if they just want to keep the panic alive. It's time for you to find something else to preach about. Now, if you don't get your paychecks (assuming you actually have a job) or your social security checks, etc. then MAYBE you have a concern. Keep in mind however that one misdirected check, or dropped one for that matter, nor a power grid going down, cable going out, phone circuits tied up, etc. does not a Y2K incident make. It's the "Chicken Little" story, or the "Boy Who Cried Wolf." If you keep insisting somethings wrong when it isn't, then when something really does happen no one's going hear you. Move on. If something does come up you can be pretty certain the vast majority of us will know it too.

Just my two cents... -BCarver

Bruce,

That was exactly the kind of "intelligent" repsonse I expected. Thanks for keeping my expectations realistic.

Read Mr. Way's comments. So far, his predictions are looking more accurate than anyone elses. He believes that are serious problems ahead.

Mr. Way's just guessing like the rest of us. He has no idea how anyone's remediation has gone. Nor do we. Just more speculation that has very often been wrong on this subject. I take it as a lot of hot air.

That does not mean he's wrong. Just not necessarily right because of his credentials. They don't give him the ability to predict the future or see into the code of all the systems.

And I read it as "there are serious tests ahead" not necessarily problems.

Prior to the actual rollover, the general belief by most on this forum (including me) was that the lack of Y2K type problems was largely irrelevant -- i.e., until we entered 2000, the lack of problems in 1999 meant nothing. And I believe that was a reasonable position to have taken (sorry, Hoffy).

However, now that we are IN the year 2000, and the only problems appear to be a sprinkling of fairly innocuous glitches here and there, it is a different story. I would tend to think that if we are going to see a LARGE number of SERIOUS problems, then we would be seeing at least a FEW SERIOUS problems now.

I think that it makes sense to wait and see what happens over the next few weeks. But each day gives me more confidence that Y2K is not anything like it was cranked up to be by doomers like myself.

A new soapbox? This one is still in fine shape, thank you very much. In fact, it is hardly used at all so far.

I don't even pretend to be the brightest bulb in the string, but I do have a few brains left you know.

Let's not count this thing as over and done with until we have some flying time in this new world. If we are still solidly on our feet, and haven't taken on too much water by mid July, I intend to donate half of my stash to the Salvation Army and stand down to a DEFCON 4.

The remainder of the stash will be just that. Remaining in my stash.

Until then, I'll just keep an eagle eye out on this little thingy, and remain at a DEFCON 2, if you don't mind. Even if you *DO* mind I will still do it. TS.

If it comes to naught, which I hope will be the case, then BHFD, I will get back to doing what I do best. Living a quiet life, kicked back and happy, enjoying my retirement.

But, irrespective of the final outcome of this little tour through the weeds of the "Digital H*ll" that we have called y2k, I will never again allow my family to be caught less than fully prepared for most of the other bumps and lumps of living. Never again.

Oh, and BTW, I don't panic all that easily, and I'm not panicked now.

I am just a tad concerned that such a large amount of work, by so many people, in so many places, in so many countries, over so long a time has resulted in what appears to be a miracle according to the world press to date, and surprises even the vast majority of the whiz kids who do it for a living. I know nothing of computers and such affairs, but I have learned a few things in 60 years of toddling around this little rock of ours.

SO:

1. Either the thing was a crock of crap to start with, in which event we are in deep ca-ca, and are governed by fools and idiots, both in and out of government. (I will believe the fools and idiots part, but not the crock.)

2. We have witnessed a true miracle of the Prime Magnitude.

3. It is entirely too da*n early to decide on either #1 or #2.

4. Divine intervention has allowed us to escape the reckoning for our folly, and no bills will come due to anyone. Sort of a Free Bubble-up and Rainbow Stew thing as Merle Haggard said.

With the fullness of time we all shall see which is the probable truth. I think #3 will probably be the closest to the mark.

Your Royal Highness KOS,

>I think that it makes sense to wait and see what happens over the next few weeks. But each day gives me more confidence that Y2K is not anything like it was cranked up to be by doomers like myself.<

You and I agree on this one, even though you do seem to spend entirely too much time with a "dirty" mind, and flirting with the other monkeys monkey, to my way of thinking.(G)
