I'm so glad that infomagic guy was wrong - he was scary

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Those essays that infomagic wrote frightened me a great deal! I'm so relieved that he was wrong. How can a person go around scaring people like that? Doesn't he have a conscience?

I don't see how he can be wrong yet. He said most everything would happen in the months of January and February. We haven't gotten there yet.

-- Kim Scaramastro (kim@antipas.org), January 03, 2000.

I agree, you will have to wait for the infomagic factor to be totally discounted. Devolutionary spiral does not, has not, and will not even happen over night.

-- Always Ready Now (prepared@ayear.ago), January 03, 2000.

How can he be right? The power is on, the phones work, I got money from the ATM today, bought groceries with my VISA, gas was the same price at Amoco today, even the traffic lights worked! I don't see how he or anyone can still think the world is going to end!

-- Bethany Billings (Bethany2033@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

Every company I talked to last week, shut down their computor systems for the weekend. They will be firing them up tomorrow and Tuesday. Not one of these companies (small business) took Y2K seriously. Thier plan was FOF. If this is the general rule, the most dangerous day to roll through was not Jan 1, but the first week of regular business. Let us wait until Jan 17 or so before lowering our guard OK.

-- Always Ready Now (prepare@ayear.aog), January 03, 2000.

There is a company here in cleveland which is one of only 2 in the world that does what it does. their IS department has decided to FOF on the office computers. the time clock function has not been checked. Fortunately, they use NO computers to do what they do, which is to rebuild Locomotive cylinders and pistons. (pistons they handle won't fit through the frame on your computer monitor, unless you use a home theater for a monitor).

We anxiously await Tuesday morning when they go to work and turn on the computers. (They are closed Monday, it's a Union Shop).

Why do you people want to peddle fear? I don't understand it. It isn't nice.

-- Bethany Billings (Bethany2033@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

Yeah Chuck I know of whom you speak. We also know another LARGE Cleveland Area based insurance company who shut down their computers before the rollover and have not brought them back on line. The computers cannot handle the leap year either. i know that for a fact. Lurking, as usual.

-- lurking, as usual (lindagrog@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

Chuck, this attitude to the Y2K problem is typical through out the service sector that I work in. They never really believed that it was an issue much less any kind of problem that may interrupt business. Subsequently many are on a path of FOF and do not even know it. When I left the office last Thurday, the account was having problems with the accounting program. It said that we owed $50,000+ in taxes when it was only $8,000. Now the payment had to be maid, so she filled out the form manually and cut a check. She called the programmer, he did not understand what the problem was. They installed this Y2K compliant program in May 99. Since then they have had continuuos problems. This situation, unforunately, has the potential of becoming increasingly troublesome.

Come on guys...thousands of people are working this weekend...bringing the systems back on line... They are not waiting for Monday or Tuesday There is too much at stake...namely...$$$$$$$$$$ Yes, there will be problems and failures...and yes they will fix on failure But that is the norm It's over. grab a six pack and watch the ball games.. your beating a dead horse.

Why would anyone want to peddle premature sunshine, Bethany? Just because you can't see something, does that mean it isn't there?

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), January 03, 2000.

Get Real, I looked forward to NORMAL again. Simplicity, I trust, is right around the corner. But, after what I have seen in the last two years, there is no way that I can prudently just except that something so complex is over in one day. Yes the power stay up, thank God. But, there are many other systems yet to boot back up. One example of this is Ontario Water and Waste who's plan was to go to generator power for 5 days starting on Dec 30. They have 4000 water plants in Ontario. I would like to wait until they bring these plants back onto the gird as one of the "All OK" signs before relaxing.

-- Always Ready Now (Prepared@ayear.ago), January 03, 2000.

Will, I see your point; but, when is this going to be over? I used to be afraid of driving alone at night, now I'm afraid of the world ending ... When can I stop being afraid?

-- Bethany Billings (Bethany2033@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

Bethany, there is little you, I or anyone else can do about the path the world takes. I personally chose not to worry about things I have no control over. Otherwise, life becomes too difficult. Maybe moving to a smaller center for you would be a good idea. We moved to a town of 300 from a city of 800,000 4 years ago. I will never move back. We like the security and peace.

Bethany,

You can stop being afraid RIGHT NOW, dear. It's over---finished, dead in the water, ain't gonna happen. You have to understand that this whole Y2K thing was blown out of proportion by Gary North to sell subscriptions to his $129 a year newsletter. Then others like Yourdon, Hyatt, McAlvaney, Lord saw the profit potential and hopped on the bandwagon to cash in too. And they all made LOTS of money-by scaring people like me and you. But North is now too embarrassed to even update his website for two days, and the others are rapidly backpedaling, claiming they never said what they did about the severity of the problem. Ha! You have to understand that at one time Mr. North was a Christian, but turned away from the true faith and began to worship Mammon, money, filthy lucre, and will say almost anything to keep the bucks rolling in. I imagine the same is true of the others I referred to. As for Infomagic, my guess is that he enjoys playing games with people's heads. Either that or he is crazy.

Bethany, you sound like a nice person. Please stop worrying and relax. It was mostly a hype to make money.

-- Forget It (computergeek75@hotmail.com), January 03, 2000.

I just have to think positively about this. If you think negative, you just create negativity.

-- Bethany Billings (Bethany2033@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

Forget what Forget It said, Bethany. Already Prepared is the one you should listen to. Fear is a good thing if it prompts appropriate action. If you haven't done any preparation, I suggest getting some rice and beans. Trust me dear, being prepared is the best fear anecdote there is!

-- B. Reel (Bereal@fearnot.com), January 03, 2000.

It ain't over 'till it's over Bethany.

And it ain't over.

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), January 03, 2000.

Buy rice and beans? Now? Does anybody else out there think this is good advice? Wouldn't it be better to wait and see if there are more problems first? I don't have a lot of money.

-- Bethany Billings (Bethany2033@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

Bethany,

No, buying a bunch of beans and rice is not a good idea now. Unless of course you want to resell it to these folks at a higher price when Gary North invents his next crisis. And pay no attention to B.Reel- who says that fear is a good thing but then signs himself as "fearnot"! And why would you listen to someone who can't even spell the word "antidote"?

There are some real kooks on this board---some of them even believe the theories of a guy named David Ickes, who teaches that Prince Charles is really a giant reptile from outer space. I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP-some people on this board actually believe that!!!

So rest easy, Bethany, and don't let these freaks worry you.

-- Forget It (computergeek75@hotmail.com), January 03, 2000.

hi bethany, do you "mudwrestle", IDO!...anyway, someday our fragile civilization will fall, wither from a stupid mistake or war or some asteroid...but the coast is clear for now. It was a REAL problem that got fixed (at least mostly fixed as far as we can see) by real $$$. I saw on CNN that the Honk Kong stock exchange spent $400,000,000 to get fixed.

So the good new is...IT's OVER...i'llcome to this site for a few more days/weeks cause it's like saying goodbye at summer camp.

Have a great 2000, do some nice things for people & for yourself. Dont worry so much...maybe talk up the idea that solar/renewable energy might be a good idea (so we dont have to worry as a society...but i think that's something the oil companies have more say in...).

Have fun mudwrestling thru 2000...we MADE it...the timebomb was a dud!

-- IDo (IDonotcheckmy@onebox.com), January 03, 2000.

Bethany, Do you have life insurance? Do you have insurance on you most precious belongings? Bulk food is the most inexpensive. Yes beans and rice and maybe some soya source to go with it. If you don't invest in yourself Bethany, who will? Don't you look before you cross the street? I have never stored food before the Y2K issue. I do now though and I am finding out that it is a great idea. You never know when your job might end or some other intruption to your personal ability to care for yourself. I have, over the years given 1000$ of food away to those who have none, now I have a storehouse that I can access quickly without running to town. Buying provisions after the problem starts is dangerous and simply poor planning. Being always ready will give you some of that confidence that you are suggesting that you currently do not have.

-- Always Ready Now (Prepared@ayear.ago), January 03, 2000.

Oh, i forgot to add, i have my 2 or 3 months worth of supplies...maybe by the end of the year i can have that up to 5 or 6 months worth...it never hurts to be prepared!!! goodnite B

-- I Do (not plan on getting married again, but i never say never) (Idonotcheckmy@onebox.com), January 03, 2000.

"Always ready"

I agree with you..there are many problems yet to face..

I don't think we are out of the storm yet.

Things have gone so well that there may be a tendency to let down our guard. There is still a certain degree of caution required.

However, our basic infrastructure has held ! ! No lives have been lost! Problems, such as a ATM down, or a faulty date on a web site are minor and will be fixed soon.

No, I am not a polly. I prepared as much as my personal finances would allow. I am in shock ( and grateful ) that this appears to be a non event. Considering what COULD have happened, I am more than happy to accept the "bumps" coming my way.

FWIW, the garage where I park updated their computer system for Y2K. Last week they sent me a bill for $925.00 for one months parking. Ohhhhhhhhhh ya know...I can deal with this...Yes, it will be a royal pain in the butt...I have to pull all of my check stubs and PROVE that I have paid and don't owe this...but, what the hell...I'll live through it.

Thank you all for responding. You're all so kind to try and help me. Good night and God Bless.

-- Bethany Billings (Bethany2033@aol.com), January 03, 2000.

Life is simply an adventure. Everyday that sun rises is another day full of intersting challenges and hopes. It will be like that until it is time to go home. "Beloved, let us love one another......" "What soever things are good, lovely, of good report, think on these things".

-- Always Ready Now (Prepared@ayear.ago), January 03, 2000.

Yes, Bethany, you should wait.

It's true that it's not over yet. But any problems that crop up from here on out will not be any more serious than those that have cropped up thus far. Doom predictions were wrong last January 1, April 1, July 1, August 22, September 9, October 1, and now on January 1 again. They will continue to be wrong.

Problems will arise, I'm sure; but they will be handled, will be managed; just as they have been thus far. Just as they are every day of every year. It's now Monday afternoon in Asia; no Doom reported there. No problems in the Middle East.

And there's just no way to cover up problems on a global scale, as Andy has claimed is being done. Totally impossible.

Being "prepared" (as defined on this forum) is not the best defense against fear. Knowing the truth is.

-- Chicken Little (panic@forthebirds.net), January 03, 2000.

Also, whenever passing a graveyard, remember to whistle.

Finally, when things get *too* scary, stick your head in the sand and Think Positive Thoughts!
