Is Y2K Like HIV & AIDS?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Is The Y2K Bug Like HIV? First you get infected, then it runs in your system multipling while nothing is evident on the surface. Then one day you start to cough, and get rashes, then full blown AIDS, then you die.

Is this in our Y2K future?

Not a bad analogy. Charlotte's web disintegration is not linear. To illustrate the way to think about the timing, solve this riddle:

A man walks by a pond every day, and on the first of May, he notices a lilly pad. On the second, he notices two, the next day four, etc., with the number of lilly pads doubling every day. He notices that on May 31, the pond is covered with lilly pads. Question: on what day was the pond 10% covered? Hint: it wasn't May 3.

My guess is that there could be no lilly pads because the Doomers came and took all the water and stored it!

100%=Day31, 50%=D30, 25%=D29, 12%=D28, thus sometime on the 27th was 10%, 90% of the growth was in the last 4 days of a 30 day month.

And the Nasdeq jus about doubled this year, what year will it reach the moon?

Is it some time during the 25th day??

Does the pond have 33,554,432 lily pads?

I love these questions.

Give us the answer.

There is absolutely no proof that HIV causes AIDS or any other disease

How about another thrilling mathematical problem?

A snail climbs a ten foot high flagpole. Each day she climbs three feet, but each night she slimes back down two feet while she sleeps (thus gaining on foot per day).

How many days will it take her to get to the top of the flagpole?

(Careful--you are going to feel dumb if you don't get the answer right)

ok, ok. I'll bite. The snail will reach the top of the flagpole in, um 8 days?

But what I really want to know is how many lily pads that darn snail has to use to cross the pond.
