State Workers in Michigan not being paid? How prevalent?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

A friend at Church who works for the State of Michigan and was to be paid by 12/31, 8:00 A.M., was not paid and is concerned that it might be Y2k-related. She is a single mom with four children and is very dependent on her check, and very conscientious about paying her bills on time.

Does anyone know what the problem might be here in Michigan?

was it a direct deposit?

You know Connie, I've twice mentioned that my Dad's FEDERAL RETIREMENT CHECK was not deposited on Friday *as always*. People don't care because none of them appear to be missing portions of their monthly income. Or is it because there are no children or innocent animals involved? LOL

Connie (and those about to post similar stories),

Wait a few days and post again. So far we're talking of a one workday delay. Hardly worth mentioning imho (and yes I've had my check delayed before several days due to payroll glitches so I know what it's like).

peace

There are no "missing" checks, there is no "y2k" glitches, this is all just a figment of your doomsday imaginations. Yeah sure.

Good Folks, perpare for a lot of this. I truly feel sorry for the working mom, needs her check, and it's screwed up through no fault of hers. We're being lied to in a major way. But these incidents, antidotal situations, are only going to continue and get worse. Just remember, we're nuts, they're not.

My friend's hubby (they are in MI, too) works at a big computer company and was supposed to have his direct deposit in on Friday (as usual)--but NADA!--she talked to the bank and they told her to take it up with his company on Monday...

Mike:

My Dad has been a fed employee for umpteen years and never missed a check ONCE. I collected SS widow's benefits for 16 years and NEVER missed a check. Not by one day, one hour or even minutes. All I'd like to know is, did anyone else have their check 'not show up'? It's a federal check not some payroll check from Elmo's Wingnuts and Crankshafts. My father worked for the State for 20 years prior to his fed job and never recieved a late check either, fyi.

Gee, I gotta call my dad and see if he got his....he is also a retire dfederal employee from the US Army Corp of Engineers...

My understanding is that the Federal government was to deposit SS benefits and welfare benefits on the 31st....

Well, I'm due to get paid from my government job on the 11th....If folks don't get paid, or their benefits are late, they will be screaming bloody hell -- I know I will....

I just checked. My sister said that he got it (by mail).

I smell a troll. Since when does the State of Michigan (or any state ffor that matter) pay it's employees on a legal (observed) holiday. Doesn't happen...

Too bad you guys don't work for the State of California.

They paid us a day early!

NO problems here...

To Will-- I noticed both your postings on the federal check not coming. I agree that it is a major indicator. I'd be interested in hearing if it shows up Monday. My remaining assets may need a redistribution. Pam

My daughter received her January, 2000 SSI check on December 30th. We're in Washington State.

The HCFA did a state-by-state risk assessment in September, 1999, for potential post-rollover federal benefit payment failures. Assessments were on site. Michigan's federal-to-state benefits systems were, according to my records, initially assessed in March, 1999 (early in the on site assessment process). Michigan's risk status was "Low." That may have changed later in the year, however, I don't have data beyond the September posting.

Until more information is available on Y2K federal benefit failures, we won't know if such failures occurred at the federal or state level. I believe the chance is higher for federal-to-state benefit failures to occur at the state level due to the overall variance in state-to- state Y2K compliance status, but, again, until more information is available, my opinion is just that: an opinion.

Feds pay the day prior to a holiday as well, but my mother didn't check on line until Friday morning. State pays day before if my memory is correct. Thanks for the follow up Mello 1 and I'll keep you posted Pamela.

The joys of cyber money.

Well.. call me paranoid but, my childrens child support checks have been screwed up this past 15 days (Oregon). Payments credited that werent made... halts on REAL payments to fix the *human error* of the payments that were credited that werent made. This week my childrens support is literally 1/3 of what it is supposed to be yet the childrens father has his check stub that shows he sent in the full amount (I havnt received this payment yet and it was sent out on the 27th.. we usually receive the support the day after they send it). When I call in tomorrow to find out why we have been missing payments (that dad HAS payed)and why payments have been less etc.. I am sure they will reassure me that it is just *human error*

Funny how we never had this *human error* ONCE (until now) in the whole three years the children have been receiving their support...

lenny: I'm sorry I haven't answered your question. (About direct deposit). I haven't been able to speak to my friend since yesterday and I don't know her # at work.

I DID check with MY bank to see if our S.S. checks were deposited and they were, but it's the first time in at least three years that I got a human voice to give me information. I was surprised, but didn't ask her if the computers being down (she said they were down) was Y2k related or not. (Didn't want to tempt her to lie). ;-)

I agree that a big deal shouldn't be made of one check not arriving on time, and should wait and see, but I was curious.
