Y2K was a non-event, so does anyone want my preps?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

No problems anywhere in the world and some of you keep worring that "it will snowball, just give it time, a week, a month, a year, a decade, a... I promise, it'll snowball; go buy more preps..." Well, nothing happened. To make a snowball, you have to start with SNOW!!!!! Y2K was A TOTAL NON-EVENT, so I'm trying to get rid of most of my preps, before I'm perminatly stuck with them. If the worst problems that even the biggest doomers can come up with are from Pakistan, and those stupid 19100 and 3900 glitchs then y2k was a waste of time to even worry about. I wish I had never bought most of this crap. The gun, the KI, the Blankets, the water purification tablets, the radio... Ok I like the wind up radio a bit... Point is I've wasted a great deal of time and effort on this and it's all gone... DAMN IT! The total impacts of y2k will fall in the 0-3 range, most likly a 0. It's over and we've wasted our time. Find something else to worry about, will you?!? So does anyone what all that useless crap I bought? The y2k store that I bought it from closed and it doesn't look like they will reopen... The owner is probably in the Carrabian and I don't blame him. He made a lot of money off of me and the others who bought his stuff. He had promiced to take it all back if he was open, so of course he closed.... What a WASTE!!!!!!!! ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!! Damn it, why didn't I listen to all of my friends and put my money in the stock market?!?!? I could have made thousands, MILLIONS of dollers. DAMN IT ALL!!! Thanks for the waste of time guys. Forget it, it's my fault... I don't think I'll post much anymore, so will anyone buy the useless crap I bought??? Any takers? Andy? Nikoli? INVAR? King of Spain? ???

Crono,

Hey, relax a bit there! Take a deep breath and count to ten. Give it a few weeks at least, then sell your preps. You never know.

And put that gun on a REALLY high shelf...you sound a little upset.

Peace,

John Ludi

Crono,

understandable given the fact that society was programmed to believe the rollover fallacy.

Just heard on CNN--only 10% of the worlds computer where turned on this weekend.

You have come this far. Wait!! nothing ever happens as we suspect-- does it??

-- d......... (dciinc@aol.com), January 02, 2000.

Oh, my heart bleeds for you. Perhaps you should get in line with the other whingers to blame your government and utilities for wasting all your money.

Do total prices include shipping?

-- dinosaur (dinosaur@williams-net.com), January 02, 2000.

If I remeber correctly, The Gartner Group says that the percentage of y2k related failure dates was approximately this 35% before Jan 1st, 10% around the rollover, 55% after the rollover.

To make a snowball, you have to start with SNOW!!!!!

SNOW!!!!!!!

Crono stop whining, you got your life in order. God forbid that anything should happen but if it does, you and those you love are covered.

I posted last night that I'm going to continue prepping. I like the idea of being as independent as possible. The next thing I'm looking into is solar and having a well dug.

This whole "Y2K thing" has made me realize that you never know what will happen in life. Today the sun shines on us and life is good, but that may not be the case tomorrow.

GAWD!!!! ONE MORE TIME!!!!

You can't say yay or nay about Y2K impacts until you at least see how things play out over the next few weeks! If you are really prepared, sit back, cook up some rice and beans, and relax. Do you look in disbelief at the smoke alarms in your house, saying "Go off, damn it! How come you never go off!!"?????

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), January 02, 2000.

People can say that the worst is yet to come all they want, but the facts are this: so far nothing significant has happened, throughout 1998, 1999 and the dreaded rollover. Why the heck should we believe any other prophesies. Next week we will begin to hear stories of every little glitch in the world, big or small. Many will be fooled by the volume into thinking something big is on the horizon (death by a thousand small cuts or whatever).

The world is a glitchy place. We are not teetering on the verge of collapse.

You sir Crono, are an incredible dipshit. Why are the preps wasted? What in the world did you purchase that you can't possibly use? Being somewhat self sufficient is never a waste. What if you lose your job or the economy goes bonkers and it costs too much to eat? Those preps will come in mighty handy. Relying on a JIT system is plain stupid and most Americans have forgotten that our grandparents and their parents always had preparations set aside. Crying about "lost money" is a sign of your erroneous thinking. I'm keeping my preps and I can bet I've got far, far more then you and most others. I could give a shit about that stock market or how much money "I could have made". My family is taken care of, I'm taken care of and no matter what might happen, I've got what I need for years. That is a far better investment then worrying about the supposed $$ I lost. Get a life and get some focus man. Thinking that $$ is the answer to everything is just plain dumb.

I think the whole embedded chip issue is farce otherwise we would have seen alot more problems anybody else? gm

-- gm (gregman900@yahoo.com), January 02, 2000.

Crono, you can't be serious! I don't know of one single intelligent man that would give up his firearm and ammo. All the hoops you gotta jump through to just get the gun is enough to make you go temporarily insane. So you want to unload those blankets? They were probably made in China or some other foreign country and we don't really know the true status of their situation. There's article after article in the TB2000 archives on the status of these countries remediation program, and if I remember right, it was FOF. I've got some water purification tablets and I plan on taking them camping with me, one never knows when one may need them. Now about the stock market, yeh, it's been a real rocky up and down year, but come Monday Crono jump right back into it there's still plenty of time to make those millions. Your in control, you can do whatever you wish to do and the choices are yours to make. BTW, before Y2K ever came along, did you ever error on the side of safety?

Hey Crono, my email is real, let me know what kind of gun and how much you want for it. But nevermind if it is a handgun. Thanks.

Crono It's all over why don't you and your didn't do your homework friends get off the form so we can get some intelligent info here. You have no shame you are a follower and not a leader.

Crono,

My email addy is real - when you get a list with prices made up please send it to me - I have always felt we should be prepared more than we actually were - and it feels good now that I have my son. Anyhow, we live in earthquake/wildfire/flood country here in Northern California. If I were you I would really think twice before dumping all your preps - think of what great insurance it is for any economic hard times, disasters, etc. - maybe you could then be part of a solution instead of part of the problem, if such an event should occur. Hang in there and enjoy the HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!

:)

-- Kristi (securxsys@cs.com), January 02, 2000.

Crono,

Take a deep breath and think insurance. In this case your premiums are not lost. You have food and preps for a lot of emergencies or to just start on now. We started into ours yesterday. My plan was to have food to eat for a year, and we do.

The good news is we will get to supplement it now with fresh vegetables and meat and milk. You get to do the same thing!

The bad news? None really. I did spend a lot of time on the internet researching and lurking, but you know what? I learned a heck of a lot about a lot of different things. I bet you did too. Since when has learning ever been a waste of time?

Maybe you are afraid people will laugh at you? I'm not. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, I did what I felt was best. That is all any of us can do. Those that laugh and scoff are really not important in my life. They would not have been there to save one member of my family had things gone bad. If they can not be of benefit to me and mine, then their opinion isn't worth the beans I have stored.

As for feeling foolish, you have nothing to feel foolish for. You purchased once-in-a-lifetime insurance to keep your family safe. Make no apologies for anything you did to prepare, it was all done with love for those you care about.

And don't be bitter Crono, life is too short and too precious for that. It is, after all is said and done, why we prepared!

-- Dian (bdp@accessunited.com), January 02, 2000.

Crono,

I'll buy your stash of trash, if it is in good working order, the food is reasonably current(please, no 1945 surplus C rations), and none of the stuff is "hot."

Ten cents on the dollar; you provide the receipts for comparison, or be willing to go with the current market prices of similar merchandise that I can get off of the 'net.

This is a firm offer; if you are serious, let me know and I'll give you an e-mail address where we can conduct business privately.

That is, if this is what you really want to do; I think it might be better just to play "wait and see" for a few weeks. Remember, you can always eat your Y2K insurance premium; can you go and buy a bass boat/ trip to Maui/whatever with the fire insurance premium you spent in 1999?

If you really want to sell, looking forward to doing business with you!

Thanks.

Don

Crono,

Food is something that will always be needed by someone. We like being prepared and we use some of our preparations and donate some when it nears the expiration date. There are a lot of folks that do not have enough to eat. Yes, in American. There are a lot of children without enough to eat. Yes, in America.

Survival equipment can always be used; local disasters as insurance, as well as the need in the rest of the world during disasters.

You can write off donations of whatever you do not see yourself needing or using. Someone will make use of them.

Coming from a place of generosity is good for the spirit. It is not clear to me how good the stock market is for the spirit.

Just something to think on. Please, Crono, think before you act. (I am not trying to offend)

Blessings and peace to you always.

-- Leslie (***@***.net), January 02, 2000.

Y2K was a total non-event?

I'll be happy to personally look up and give you the telephone numbers of the families of the folks that got gunned down in Tampa, so you can tell them about the "non-event."

Hell, I'll even pay for the calls.

Why not sell all of your stuff, and donate the proceeds to these families so that a memorial, college fund, or something like that can be set up? Hell, they may need the cash for funeral arrangements.

For you, the rollover was a non-event; be thankful.

Peace,

Headcase

Gun: useful for self-defense and a fun hobby. Millions of Americans had guns long before Y2K was on the radar screen. Arguably gun ownership is a responsibility of law-abiding citizens, since it reduces violent crime and keeps the gov't from getting too uppity.

KI: Doesn't take much space and unlimited shelf life. Nuclear accidents happen now and then. Nuclear bombs are proliferating and Russia has lost a few.

Blankets, water purification: most critical items for any natural disaster.

Radio: as you say, fun to play with.

So what's your problem?
