Just saw in the AP press that Ukranian cargo ship sank. They feel it could have been weather related, but did not have details at this time.

Wow, guess the computer must have gotten the date confused and decided to destroy the ships hull.

Shipping is another biggie because is connected to the food supply as well as supplying things to all the other parts of the economy, ship hs sunk, power station on fire, it seems concidential these things are just 'suddenly' happening out of nowhere. So shipping has to work, it must not suffer too many disruptions or glitches otherwise it will impact everybody.

Back a day or two before Jan 1, 2000, I heard a report on BBC radio that a small tanker had run aground in the Bosphorus in Istanbul and sunk. There was no lose in life, but the ferry traffic between the European and Asia side was halted. That might been because of the rough sea or the oil. I do not recall the exact statement. They were also concerned about an oil slick now, and there have been increasing concerns that someday there would be a major sinking because of so much ship traffic on the Bosphorus.

I looked for more on this cause I used to live in Istanbul and never saw any sign of it in local paper... Charlotte Observer.

Ukrainian Ship Sinks in Black Sea Sunday January 2 3:10 AM ET

MOSCOW (AP) - A Ukrainian cargo ship sank early Sunday in the Black Sea and at least some members of the 12-man crew survived, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry reported.

A ministry rescue helicopter spotted two lifeboats in Russian waters near the site of the sinking, but it was unclear how many people were aboard, a ministry official in Moscow said.

The Tiksi dry cargo ship, flying a Cambodian flag, was sailing between Nikolayev, Ukraine, and Poti, Georgia. The ministry said that the cause of the sinking was unknown, but it may have been stormy weather.

No other details were immediately available.

[sure doesn't seem Y2K related]
