RUMOR DEBUNKED: Possible sewage malfunction (Albany, CA)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : One Thread

I have a report from a previously Y2K-skeptical friend in the Albany area of the Oakland Bay Area of CA, as follows:

"Well Irv, you were right about Y2K - I wasn't a believer. I wasn't worried about Y2K. And.. then it happened. Computer on, music on... and then, for the first time since we moved in the house....at about 4 PM on 1 Jan 2000...THE SEWER BACKED UP! Coincidence???? I think not! Now I'm a believer!"

Nothing on this has come through the national media. How many such situations might there have been?

Note from SYSOP - Irv writes on January 3rd that: "I've confirmed that my earlier report of a sewer outage in Albany was NOT either a Y2K or an area-wide malfunction, but was localized to the particular residence, and a matter of coincidence that it occurred on 1/1/00."

Response to Possible sewage malfunction in Albany, CA

Irv,

I'm curious.

Is this a common problem where your friend lives?

Is this happening to his neighbors, too?

What did your friend find out from the utility that's responsible for service?

And, how is your friend relieving the problem?

Thanks,

My toilet backed up just 7 days before the rollover! But it had nothing to do with Y2K--it had to do with what was flushed.

Is your friend on sewer or septic? How long has he lived in the house? Was it jsut the sewer or also the grey water? Does he use a pump to lift sewage? Is the pump working? 4 P.M.? Doesn't sound like a rollover problem.

Lots to check out here.

Richard

Response to RUMOR: Possible sewage malfunction (Albany, CA)

I just finished speaking with an officer from the Albany Police Department, who said he had not heard any news about this. He did give me the number for the City Public Works department, that will be open on Monday. I asked if there was any Emergency Operations Center for the city that might have more information, and he said the police department wa

oops! just learning how to use this software.

Anyways, the police officer said that the police dept. was it as far as emergency operations over the weekend, and seemed pretty busy and unwilling to look into it further. So I think this is all we will be able to find out through official sources for now, until offices open on Monday. I would encourage the original poster to see if his friend can provide more informa

Response to RUMOR: Possible sewage malfunction (Albany, CA)

Irv Thomas (the original poster of this "incident") has debunked the rumor himself, sending this note to me:

"However, I have a retraction in...it turns out it was only a personal sewer backup, not a systemic one. So I shall get something back, soon, to the main y2k site."

Thanks for checking this out, Irv
