This is the CAnon EOS forum, so the obvious pick is the EOS-1.

However, presuming you have neither Canon EOS nor Nikon lenses at present, you should look at THE WHOLE SYSTEM, not which of two particular bodies suits you best. You'll be spending far more on lenses than on bodies so that should guide you. If you're not spending more on lenses, you should look for a cheaper body.

Fred: Unfortunately, your question invites various opinions that, while possibly quite helpful to you and others, also tends to encourage yet another round of Canon vs. Nikon flame wars, which many of us are tired of. And as Bob said, this is the EOS FAQ forum, so it is reasonable to expect a Canon bias here. My suggestion would be to feel and handle both systems, to carefully read about the current Canon and Nikon lens systems and overall product lines, as well as the particular features and user opinions on the two cameras in question along with user opinions for each current product line, and then decide for yourself. Both are excellent product lines, and it is most certainly true that if one has ability, motivation, talent, or any combination thereof, that either system is worthy of your investment, but it is also true that each product line offers certain objective and SUBJECTIVE advantages and disadvantages that cannot be generalized to all photographers, and a final decision rests on your abilities and motivations, expectations, needs, comfort, priorities, pocketbook, and so on, as well as YOUR assessment of which system currently seems technologically better situated to meet your future needs as you grow as a photographer.

Fred- This doesn't answer your question, but I would suggest getting a used EOS 3 over a used EOS 1. It should be about the same price and, for my purposes anyway, it's a more useful camera. I also think Bob's comment is right on about buying into a system. There are certain things that each system excels at so you should probably consider that before deciding which body you like better.

Lanier - if you can find me a used EOS-3 for the price of a used EOS-1, I'll buy it on the spot!! A used EOS-1 goes for $500-$600. A used EOS-1n may sell for $700-$800. I don't think I've seen any used EOS-3s for sale - and if they were I'd expect asking prices of $1000+.

But if course it's the system that counts. Bodies, Nikon, Canon or other, are much the same. Maybe a slightly different set of bells and whistles, but it's the lens that's going to make your images, not the body. In the Canon system, I'd get an ElanII body if money was tight. I've been very happy indeed with mine. Unless you intend to brutally abuse abuse your camera, an EOS-1(n) is probably overkill for most people. Spend the money you save on a better (or different) lens.

Oops. I read EOS1 followed by the "N" in N90s and thought EOS1n. I think that a used EOS1n and a used EOS3 in "real" mint condition (like new) are about the same price. I have seen several EOS 3's for sale but they were indeed over $1000.
