CHINA: Police on 'first degree alert' in case of chaos Police across the mainland have been on "first degree alert" since midnight on Wednesday to handle any disruption caused by the millennium bug, China News Service said yesterday. While the news agency did not explain what was meant by "first degree alert", it reiterated the Government was confident that the millennium changeover would pass smoothly as all parties were well prepared.

Computers in about 20 core industries and government departments had been passed as Y2K compliant, the agency said.

Despite the official assurance, various contingency plans had been drawn up, the agency quoted informed sources as saying.

Industries such as banking, securities, insurance, transport, aviation and electricity had carried out special drills to cope with the millennium computer bug, the spokesman for a special Y2K team set up by the Government told the agency.

A national computer centre set up to tackle the bug has linked up with similar ones abroad, including the Y2K co-ordination centre at the United Nations.

The agency said the mainland centre was confident its telephone hotlines, faxes, e-mails and other communication channels would function properly.
