Minor computer glitch, but telling

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Rented videos today in Eugene, OR. These were for two days, and when they entered the due date of 1/1/2000, the computer would not accept. Then they changed the date to 1972 or 1976, whichever calendar year is the same as 2000, and all accounts were charged something like $9000.00. These folks said they had done remediation and thought they were compliant. Minor annoyance (?) but possibly a hint of what may happen in larger systems.

Block Buster Video told me three months ago that their offices would not allow budget for remediation of any kind. Clerk stated they continually have problems NOT related to Y2K and she expected major probs at roll.

Oh yes, it was a small business, not one of the larger chains, but they did say that they thought they had "fixed" everything, and everyone, it seems, says they have fixed everything.

When all the small businesses have problems like this, are the BIG corporations just going to monopolize all aspects of business??? ..Is this the trigger for corporate takeover?
