( BW)(PA-GPU-ENERGY)(GPU) GPU To Open Y2K Command Center New Year's Eve

Business Editors

READING, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 30, 1999--GPU's Y2K Council - a group of key company leaders - will activate the company's Y2K Command Center to monitor and manage company operations during the changeover tomorrow night. The Command Center will also serve as the focal point for dissemination of company communication about Y2K, or perceived Y2K events, that may occur during the last week of 1999 through January 4, 2000. "Operation of the Command Center is an effective approach to keeping our customers, employees and stakeholders informed about GPU's transition into the year 2000," said Carl Brooks, GPU Energy vice president, human and technical resources and executive sponsor of GPU's Y2K Project. "Should an actual event occur, the Council would direct the flow of timely information to and from GPU field operatives and our key audiences." The Council is also responsible for providing sufficient resources, adequate staffing, timely mobilization of personnel and access to any necessary outside services. Teams of employees in strategic locations throughout GPU's service territory will support the Council's efforts, including a communications team, a material and services support group and a technical team to monitor computer and telephone activity. In addition, the GPU 'storm room' will be open to monitor and respond to typical system outages that could occur as a result of animal contacts, car-pole accidents, equipment failure or from weather-related events. GPU's Year 2000 Project office is fully staffed and all company business units are participating in a broad-based program to address Year 2000 concerns. Customers with questions or comments about GPU's Program can submit them to GPU's Year 2000 Project office via the year 2000 mailbox at Year2000@gpu.com. There is also a toll-free number dedicated to answering questions at 1-888-GPU-4Y2K or 1-888-478-4925. Customers can also visit the company website at www.gpu.com.
