Alternate forum if this goes down again

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

First of all, I really appreciate the efforts of Phil to revive the forum and I realize that he is doing the best he can with the equipment situation. I read his post about his plans to decrease the chances of being brought down again, but I still have one question that I would like answered concerning these plans. If another handful of people out of malicious intent or ignorance begin to run their robots again, are we still unable to withstand this event? It sounds like the capacity we need is not in place yet.

If we are still vulnerable to this happening again, which has already happened twice, perhaps it would be a smart move to organize a backup forum so that we all don't get scattered.

One option that we have is a forum set up by Lisa which is running and a few people are on it now. She is making it more secure, so the url must be sent to you by email only. If anyone wants to know the location of this backup forum, I would be happy to send you Lisa's email address. She is working hard on it so that it will be more secure and able to weather the rollover week.

I think it would be a great idea to move there now, except that we would lose access to the TB archives. But our main focus now is not education, but following the news of rollover. So I think this would not be a critical loss for Jan.

I would like a copy of the site myself. And I had made plans to download it myself, unaware of the trouble that would cause. I just had not got around to it. I would still be interested in having access to a safe way to get a copy.

What are the opinions of the regulars here on moving to a new, more secure site now? Do you feel comfortable with this location? Are you assured that it is secure?

I can only ask that you at least get the backup url and check out the site. It is in the process of being moved right now and security tightened, but by 3 central time it will be moved to the new location and ready for action. The original site had security breached, this is why Lisa is moving it. Email me for directions. If I recognize you as a regular, I will send you the url myself. I have been on this forum over a year, and I just don't want to be homeless for rollover.

Looking forward to your opinions on this matter. Let's take care of this now, before anything else goes wrong, or events take our full time attention.

Please do NOT give out the URL to protect us all, as well intentioned as you are. Plus Lisa said you will be taken off the list if she knows that you have done this.

What's wrong with comp.software.year-2000?

--Lora --- Please forward my e-mail address to Lisa, would love to be involved with this site. Thanks

As a back up to comp.software.year-2000, you can also use the open Y2K mailing list,

Click to subscribe to dc-y2k-WRP
When you get there, you should select the digest option. It's email but we're running 4-5 digests/day now. (I hope the html cut and paste worked.)

Hi Sherri,

Appreciate your concern. I have only sent Lisa's email address unless I recognize the handle and email address as a regular, which is very few cases. As far as I understood, she was requesting that the news of the site be spread to regulars. Do you think she wants to screen every person, even if they are a regular?

I will check the email she sent me again, but I did not come away with that impression.

Thanks for the heads up.

I agree that Lisa has done a great job in getting that forum established so quickly. It still needs some work as far as putting the threads in some kind of date order is concerned. Also, the following mailing lists can be subscribed to by sending a blank message to: dc-y2k-WRP-subscribe@onelist.com freerepy2k-subscribe@egroups.com roleigh_for_web-subscribe@egroups.com Y2K-Rollover-Watch-subscribe@onelist.com TB2000-Alternate-subscribe@onelist.com

Yes I would like the URL for the new TB2000 forum. I have been a regular on TB2000 and sure do miss it. Thanks, and thanks for all the work you have done to make TB2000 happen.

Please note:

Phil and two other programers are working feaverishly behind the scenes right now. The software is still in the process of stabilizing on the new machines.

Following Phil's advice, we will do "whatever" is best to protect his servers.

I feel we should stay here for now, give Lisa more time to put the finishing touches on her new secure forum, and go there when the time is right and more serious/private discussions are needed.

Don't get me wrong, I REALLY APPRECIATE everything Lisa has done for us! I think it would be wise to get some of the pressure off of her, give her some time to tidy up and let us know when things are ready...

In the meantime, we can all hang here... at HOME! At least until we're attacked again...

I have discovered this a short time ago and follow it daily now - it is THE best Y2K minute-to-minute source I have found. I haven't had anything to post yet, but please include me in any alternate / secure forum. Thanks.
